Only in New York! A pregnant woman trying to hail a cab to the hospital on the corner of 68th Street and 3rd Avenue gave birth to her baby right on the street with the help of strangers. All the details here.

An anonymous woman gave birth in the middle of a crosswalk on the Upper East Side of New York City on Monday, Feb. 24. With the help of strangers, the NYPD, and even a local news crew, both the baby and mom were happy and healthy after the surprise birth.

Woman Gives Birth On The Street In NYC

What a crazy moment! After going into labor in her apartment, a woman who prefers to remain anonymous asked her doorman for help hailing a cab. The doorman escorted her to the nearest corner — 68th Street and 3rd Avenue — but it was too late. The woman had to lay down on the sidewalk, and even as people passing by stopped to help her and call 911, she gave birth to her baby just minutes later.

UPDATE: The woman’s name is Polly McCourt and she has named her baby girl!

Strangers were seen pulling off the woman’s shoes and stockings just before the baby came out. People who were standing around as this miraculous moment happened were quick to offer up their scarves and jackets so that the baby could be swaddled and kept warm from the brisk New York weather. Thankfully, the woman’s husband made it in time to join his wife in the ambulance. Despite giving birth next to passing traffic, the woman was seen smiling and thanking the group of people who had helped her as paramedics wheeled her into the back of the ambulance.

How A News Crew Helped A Woman Give Birth On The Street

One of the most unlikely helpers in this story is the Fox News crew that was driving by. According to their report, while they were on their way to another story they noticed the woman was laying on the street corner  and pulled over to see if she was okay, assuming she had fainted. When someone surrounding the woman yelled that she had a baby right there on the street, the news crew was quick to call 911 before getting their camera equipment ready to film.

In the video, you can just barely see the woman laying on the ground because of all the people surrounding her. Towards the end you’ll notice the baby’s father kneeling next to his wife in a grey suit. You can also see the group of people who had been surrounding the woman giving her a round of applause as she is wheeled into the ambulance with her newborn.
