The addiction specialist, Dr. Drew Pinsky is opening up and vocalizing his support for his daughter, Paulina Pinsky, and her road back to recovery from her seven year battle with anorexia and bulimia. Back in November 2013, the 21-year-old revealed her struggle in an open letter on a university news website that addresses her eating disorder and her path to recovery.
In Nov. 2013, Paulina Pinksy made an admission to her mother Susan during a drive in the car that would change their lives forever. The 21-year-old Barnard College student was then brave enough to publicly blog about her 7-year struggle with anorexia and bulimia. Now, her father Dr. Drew Pinksy, 55, is addressing his daughter’s struggle and how the family is coping.
“We are so proud of Paulina and her outreach to help others and particularly empower women,” Dr. Drew told Entertainment Tonight. “When she recognized she needed help she sought treatment and actively engaged in the process. And now she is using her insights to help others.” Paulina, also a competitive ice skater, said she struggled to deal with pressure from others to be perfect, especially from her mom. In her blog post on the Columbia Spectator, Paulina revealed: “I needed me to be perfect … I was the pretty blonde girl who was a cheerleader and an ice skater. I got good grades, had a boyfriend, and was thin … But I was suffering under the weight of ‘perfection’ in a way that even I didn’t completely understand.”
The college student revealed an intimate family dinner conversation with her parents Drew and Susan in a different blog post on Endangered Bodies. The conversation focuses around the word “fat” and how — at the time —the media was constantly focused on Kim Kardashian‘s pregnancy weight gain.
“I hadn’t even completed my thought about how disgusting I found the media’s emphasis on her weight gain … before my mother interrupted me: ‘Yeah. She got really fat.’ ‘I… looked at my father… he just mumbled his medical opinion under his breath, saying, ‘You know, it’s very unhealthy for the baby to gain that much weight. Could be eclampsia.'”
In Feb. 2014, Paulina hosted a Body Positivity Week on her campus promoting a healthy outlook for college student lifestyles.
Tell us what you think, HollyMoms! Do you think Paulina will make a happy and healthy recovery from her eating disorders?
