Danica Patrick has been making headlines in NASCAR for years as the driver behind the signature GoDaddy.com race car but Richard Petty, also known as the “King of NASCAR” said that Danica has no chance of winning in her second season behind the wheel, according to CBS Sports. Many critics are claiming Richard’s comments were sexist, while others believe they were just informed observations from a seasoned veteran of the sport.
During the Canadian Motosports Expo on Feb. 10, Richard spoke his mind when asked about Danica’s chances of winning in her second season behind the wheel of a Sprint Cup Car. Richard was quite clear in his message about what it would take for Danica to pull off a win in the sport he helped build to national popularity.
“Only if everybody else stayed home,” Richard said of Danica’s chances. If that comment wasn’t bad enough he went on to say other comments that some took as sexist and discriminatory against Danica.
“If she’d have been a male, nobody would ever know if she’d showed up at a race track,” said Richard. “This is a female deal that’s driving her.”
However, one can’t be to quick to point the finger at Richard as he also made comments in support of Danica’s role in bringing more fans to NASCAR.
“She has helped to draw attention to the sport, which helps everybody in the sport.”
