Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony Looks Like ‘The Hunger Games’

The 2014 Winter Olympics are officially here, and they’re already as exciting as we thought they would be! The opening ceremony went off with a bang as each team walked into the arena representing its mother country — but as great as each team looked, we couldn’t help but think of ‘The Hunger Games!’

Can you say Effie Trinket, anyone? The Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremony had us doing double takes on Feb. 7, as they bore an uncanny resemblance to scenes from one of our favorite franchises: The Hunger Games. The teams — who volunteered as non-lethal tributes — were accompanied by some glamorous chaperones who looked like they came straight from the Capitol!

This year’s Winter Olympics are already off to a jaw-dropping start. The Opening Ceremony had us hooked — as all of the participating countries made their way into the arena accompanied by booming music, the crowd could not help but cheer at the spectacle… you’d think Caesar Flickerman was hosting!. But even though all of the nations represented looked spectacular — despite none of them being a “girl on fire” — it was the assigned escorts that had us questioning whether we were watching the Olympics or The Hunger Games.

The escorts who led each competing team into the arena were decked out in futuristic, all-white costumes as they held a circular object that bore each respective country’s name. These ladies were not only able to carry the seemingly heavy name tags while walking in sky-high heels, but they also accessorized with phenomenal, Capitol-esque gold and blue head pieces. (We’re pretty sure Effie already has one in pink.)

Is The Olympic Ceremony Really The Hunger Games?

Besides the Effie Trinket look-a-likes, the entire ceremony just seems like it is The Hunger Games in a different setting. First, this Parade of Nations requires each country to march its athletes around the stadium. Then, the whole event takes place in an arena, and of course there’s the sinister Vladimir Putin overlooking the entire spectacle like he’s President Snow.

What do you think HollywoodLifers? Do the Sochi Olympics remind you of The Hunger Games?
