Plus, Aubrey tells HollywoodLife.com that a big reveal is coming, one that will change the way ‘Nashville’ fans look at Layla.
It’s not every day a singer comes along who can rattle Juliette Barnes’ cage, but that’s exactly what Layla Grant has managed to do on Nashville‘s sophomore season. With major drama ahead for both Juliette and Layla, HollywoodLife.com spoke with Aubrey Peeples — who plays the show’s new brunette troublemaker — about how upcoming events will reveal the truth about Layla, that “she really is a good girl, just with the cover of a bad girl.”
“I’m excited for the audience to see the reveal of why Layla is the way she is, and why she puts on the tough-girl act,” Aubrey told us. “The audience just assumes she’s mean — and there’s truth to that — but she’s using it as a defense mechanism. She’s still a little girl, but the audience will soon see how she was forced to grow up. I think, or at least I hope, it’ll provide a lot of empathy for her.”
Layla’s Plans For Juliette: Is She A Friend Or Foe?
During her short time on the show, Layla has already managed to turn Juliette’s life completely upside down, leaking her affair with Charlie to the press. But with even darker times for Juliette on the horizon — the latest promos reveal Juliette passed out, possibly drunk — will she soften up and come to her aid?
“Obviously, after the last episode, Juliette’s career is basically in Layla’s hands now,” Aubrey acknowledged. “She asked Layla for help, which is a big deal because they’re enemies. The top dog is going to the underdog for help, and that theme will continue to play through future episodes. We’ll see how Layla handles that; she tries to put on her big-girl pants.”
Fortunately, no matter how much trouble Layla causes for Juliette, fans can rest assured that her feud with Hayden Panettiere ends when the cameras stop rolling.
“Hayden and I are always yelling at each other on-camera, then apologizing to each other between takes,” Aubrey told us. “The whole cast has become a family, and I feel like I’ve really been welcomed into it.”
The next new episode of Nashville airs Jan. 22 at 10/9c on ABC.
