The girls are officially back in town — yep, even Jessa. ‘Girls’ premiered its third season on Jan. 12, and to say that things have changed is an understatement. Find out what the cast had to say below!
The ladies from Girls finally returned to HBO on Jan. 12, bringing with them enough awkward sex and employment issues to make one want to skip their 20s altogether. Still, HollywoodLife.com caught up with Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke and the rest of the cast at the show’s premiere, and they offered up so much dirt that we’ve chosen to forgive that Hannah/Adam road trip sex scene.
Lena Dunham & Jemima Kirke Talk ‘Girls’ Premiere
Pretty much everyone who tuned in to Season 2 thought that Hannah and Adam’s (Adam Driver) big romantic reunion in the season finale would end in disaster (that sex scene with Shiri Appleby, anyone?), but when we meet Girls‘ wackiest couple in Season 3 they’re enjoying their version of domestic bliss. HollywoodLife.com asked Lena for details, and the outspoken star said she sincerely hopes that people are still rooting for them as a couple, despite their often inherent unlikability.
“I hope that, despite all of the insane nonsense, people are in some way rooting for this relationship while also recognizing that it’s insane,” she said.
Lena also stressed that it won’t be all about that relationship this season. Hannah finds some success in the publishing world — success that is quickly compromised in one of the strongest and darkest episodes of the series — and even goes as far as to get a “real” job.
“She’s really trying to push forward, and it leads her into a lot of zones,” Lena continued. “She starts working an office job. She’s expanding, but it’s not always easy.”
Then there’s Jessa, who spent much of the night in between guest star Danielle Brooks‘ (Orange is the New Black) legs in a scene that definitely won the “scene you definitely shouldn’t watch with your parents” award for the night.
“My head was fully between her legs for three hours,” Jemima said.
Jemima also stressed that Jessa’s stint in rehab changed nothing, essentially. So while Hannah is reaching for personal growth and pushing forward, Jessa is still just floating on.
“She has good intentions, but she’s going about it all the wrong way,” she said. “Just because she makes these big moves — getting married, going to rehab, whatever it is — doesn’t mean she’s serious. She just does things big.”
Ray Talks Marnie & Ray
Marnie (Allison Williams) and Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) also went through some major changes during the hiatus. Shoshanna is proudly exploring her single, sexual side (while still focusing on academics, natch) during the premiere, but guest star Evan Jonigkeit — Zosia’s real-life boyfriend — told HollywoodLife.com that his dumber-that-dirt character is about to change all that.
“It’s a sort of one-sided [relationship], but I’m the happy recipient of the [sexual] nature of the relationship,” he said with a laugh.
And what does this mean for Shoshanna and Ray (Alex Karpovsky), you ask? Only time will tell, but Alex did tell us that Ray will be spending the season bonding with a different Girl — Marnie! Marnie enters the season single, brokenhearted, and cut off emotionally from the too-busy Hannah, so she seeks solace in the strangest of places — and according to Alex, their connection comes more naturally than anyone could have possibly thought.
“It’s very complicated [with Marnie],” he said. “I think ultimately [the relationship is] quite illuminating for both of them… there’s such blatant dislike on the table, that I think that opens up the table for honesty very quickly. [They think] ‘I don’t care, this person already doesn’t like me, I’m just going to lay it out and be really direct and honest,’ and that creates a lot of vitality in their dynamic. It also allows it to progress with astronomical speed.”
Color us intrigued! But don’t fret, Shoshanna & Ray fans — Alex also told us that “Shray” will never truly die.
“In a weird way they have so much in common, I think that similarity will never go away,” Alex said. “So I think the possibility of them getting back together is always within reach because of that.”
What did you think of the premiere, HollywoodLifers? Are you excited to see more Marnie and Ray?
