Spoiler alert: Stop reading if you don’t want to know what happened on ‘Downton Abbey!’
It’s official: Life at Downton Abbey — or, at least, life for Anna (Joanne Froggatt) and Bates (Brendan Coyle) — will never be the same again. The show’s Jan. 12 episode welcomed a host of fancy-pants royals from all over the land, but it also invited the darkest scene in Downton history. Read on at your own risk!
‘Downton Abbey’: Anna Is Raped In Horrific Twist
It was pretty obvious there was something wrong with Green, one of the visiting servants, but we never imagined he would go to such extreme measures to prove his ruthlessness. In the final moments of the episode, while everyone was upstairs enjoying an evening of Australian opera, Green raped Anna in the kitchen.
Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) agreed to keep Anna’s rape a secret for fear that Bates would murder Green in retaliation, thus sending him back to prison forever. It obviously wasn’t ideal, but given the circumstances — including the time period — I understand why she agreed to do so.
Anna/Bates fans, prepare yourselves for the couple’s most intense emotional roller coaster yet over the next few weeks.
Mary’s New Suitor Revealed: Meet Anthony Gillingham
On a much brighter note, this week’s Downton also introduced us to Mary’s (Michelle Dockery) first new suitor of season four: Anthony Gillingham (Tom Cullen)! I know we’re not over Matthew (Dan Stevens) yet — and, obviously, neither is Mary — but I have to say it was nice seeing the Abbey’s former ice queen laughing and enjoying herself.
My heart broke when Rose (Lily James) brought down Matthew’s record player — Rose, why are you always the worst?! — but I’m glad Mary actually gave her situation some thought and considered it might be time to move on.
For the record, I’m very much Team Tony!
HollywoodLifers, were you stunned by tonight’s turn of events? And do you hope Mary decides to move on with Tony? Drop a comment with your take on this week’s Downton Abbey below!
