Hold on to your riding crops, ‘Fifty Shades’ fans — there’s bad news on the way. According to reports that surfaced on Jan. 5, the film adaptation of E.L. James’ book trilogy will be condensed into one film instead of three.
“Double crap!” That’s what Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) would probably say if she heard the report that Fifty Shades of Grey is only going to be one movie, instead of three like they originally planned. [Updated Information Below]
Update: Original Story Denied By Universal Pictures
After this story was initially published, Universal Pictures confirmed to TooFab.com that the rumors of Fifty being condensed into one film are false. HollywoodLife.com reached out to Universal reps for comment, and they pointed us to this June, 2013 tweet from author E.L. James:
@SabrinaMarieA8 three books. Three films. :)

What a relief! We can’t wait to see all three!
‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Will Only Be One Film
A report from the Agencia EFE via the Global Post claims that producers recently confirmed that Fifty is pulling a reverse-Hobbit and will only be one movie; not three like the book series that inspired it. “James’ trilogy will be condensed into just one film, the production company said in a recent statement,” reads the report.
I mean, it makes sense — there’s a lot of XXX sexual content in all three books, so the films will have to condense many of those sex scenes if they want to keep their R rating. That’ll mean more time to get through the non-sexual content which is… I guess only enough to fill one movie.
The report also says that Dakota and Jamie Dornan, who will play the BDSM-obsessed billionaire Christian Grey, will be shooting exterior shots in Miami over the next two weeks due to some inclement weather in Vancouver. “The downtown Miami skyline looks a lot like downtown Vancouver,” a production company rep reportedly told the publication. The duo will then reportedly travel to Tenerife, Spain, in February to shoot the honeymoon scenes that appear in the third and final book, Fifty Shades Freed. Sure sounds like they’re speeding things up, no?
HollywoodLife.com has reached out to representatives from Focus Features for comment.
What do you think of the switch-up, HollywoodLifers? Can Fifty really be contained to only one film? There’s so much story to tell!
