Dmitriy Kanarikov, 35, posted a shocking and revealing message to his Facebook page just three months before he was driven to desperation and threw his son Kirill, 3, from the roof of a NYC skyscraper on Dec. 22. The Brooklyn man was in the middle of a bitter custody battle with his estranged wife, Svetlana Bukharina, and his heartbreaking Sept. 2013 status update gives insight into the emotional turmoil he was going through for months.
“I want to be the best dad and husband – nothing is more important to me right now,” Dmitriy posted on his Facebook page on Sept. 15, 2013 along with eleven family photos that showed his wife and young son looking happier than ever at the beach and riding bikes. This was just three months before he threw his toddler son off the roof of a high-rise building and then committed suicide by jumping himself.
His emotional message reveals that he was trying to work out deep emotional issues with his family, and it makes his tragic end so much more heartbreaking.
Dmitriy’s story is so tragic, and Twitter users were overcome with a rush of conflicting emotions after hearing the news. While prayers rang out for Svetlana and her family during their time of grief, so many people were bitterly angered by the man’s selfishness and violence toward his child. Others empathized with the emotional conflict Dmitriy was facing before he committed his acts.
