Joel Brandon Jr. — nicknamed J.J. — was born on May 9, 2013 weighing in at exactly 14 pounds! The boy’s mother, Sara Brandon, says that he remains the heaviest baby born in 2013, a detail she was absolutely shocked to learn!
Sara revealed that she wasn’t entirely blindsided by her baby’s large size because early ultrasounds predicted J.J. would be about 11 pounds at birth — but she definitely wasn’t prepared for how heavy he really was. “When he came out and they put him on the scale and it said 14 pounds even, I was very shocked, to say the least,” J.J.’s mom told KSL.
The mom was scheduled to have a c-section 38 1/2 weeks into her pregnancy. Sara has type 1 diabetes, and her family genetics have contributed to larger-than-average babies born before.
The title of biggest baby in the world born in 2013 is held by baby George King from England. He weighed 15 pounds, 7 ounces at birth, in Feb. J.J. is larger than 13 pound, 4 ounce Jasleen, who was born in Germany in July — the heaviest reported baby ever born in Germany.
“We’ve kind of been watching and waiting to see if there is a baby who is bigger, because he might be the biggest of the year,” Sara said of J.J.’s impending US title.
Sara and her husband also have 2-year-old twins, who were each born at about 4 pounds. Sara joked that she can’t have “normal sized babies,” according to KSL.
At four months old, J.J. weighed in at 23 pounds. J.J. skipped wearing newborn sized diapers and went straight to size 2 — the same as his older sisters.
“(The doctor) said he’ll be a normal, healthy boy as he grows; he’ll probably just be a big, tall guy but he’ll probably slim down as he gets into his toddler years,” Sara said.
