You may not agree with every opinion Kanye West has — especially when he compares himself to Jesus and Steve Jobs — but he’s right when he says Kim Kardashian deserves a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He made this bold statement on his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Oct. 9: “By the way, I want to shout-out the Walk of Fame, they said something like they’re not gonna put my girl on the Walk of Fame because she’s a reality star,” he told Kimmel. “People are so so dated and not modern. There’s no way Kim Kardashian shouldn’t have a star on the Walk of Fame. It’s ridiculous old concepts. I’m just gonna give y’all the truth.”
So Kanye wants Kim to be memorialized on this Hollywood landmark, along with such legendary and celebrated actresses as Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and Meryl Streep.
If you’re saying, “Are you kidding me?,” then you need to hold on minute. Because guess what, if Big Bird, Donald Duck, Lassie, Woody the Woodpecker and Homer Simpson can all get stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, why can’t Kim?
She’s equally as big an icon in popular culture today as beloved police dog Rin Tin Tin was in the 1950’s, when his TV show was a hit. And she’s just as beautiful and glamorous as her own heroine, Elizabeth Taylor. Plus, she’s equally, if not more, influential as a beauty role model to millions of women as Liz was.
Walk of Fame recipients are selected in five entertainment categories each year, including the category of television . There are about 300 applicants every year to receive stars and an average of 24 are chosen, according to Ana Martinez, the Walk of Fame’s Vice President of Public Relations.
If Kim truly has been rejected by the Walk of Fame’s six person committee because she’s a reality TV star, then I have to agree with Kanye that the committee is “dated and not modern.”
Reality TV is here to stay and has just as much cultural influence as traditional TV and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is a tourist attraction, needs to wake up — it’s 2013!
If the Hollywood Walk of Fame is indeed about FAME, then Kim more than fits the requirement.
Now Hollywoodlifers, do you agree with Kanye, that Kim Kardashian deserves a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Let me know.
