Mike O’Malley has a special place in his heart for Cory Monteith, who played his character’s stepson on ‘Glee.’ In a new interview, Mike revealed that the ‘Glee’ tribute episode, airing Oct. 10, was the perfect way to honor his co-star.
Mike O’Malley had nothing but great things to say about Cory Monteith, as well as the Glee tribute episode, when he paid a visit to Ellen on Oct. 10. He said it was emotional for the cast and crew to film, and it’ll be heartbreaking for the audience who knew Cory as his character, Finn.
‘Glee’ Tribute: Cory Monteith Tribute Is ‘Remarkable’
“Cory Monteith was a great guy,” Mike, 46, said.
“He was my stepson on the show and a terrific, terrific actor and sadly he died this summer,” Mike added. “I think that the writers, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, have taken this incredible task — which was to write a story about a character that passed away — and yet honor the actor and really show the audience the love that the cast and the crew, but also that the audience, had for him.”
Cory passed away July 14 from a fatal mix of heroin and alcohol. The episode will remember Finn in song, but will not reveal the cause of his death.
“It was a really remarkable episode, and I think it’s one of the most beautiful episodes they’ve ever written on that show,” Mike said. “What was interesting about shooting the episode is that you’re tasked with doing your job, which is [telling a story] . . . and it’s a story that’s important to tell,” O’Malley said. “You realize when doing this episode, it’s about someone who’s gone. [The hard thing] is that you wanted to honor him. You wanted to honor his life . . . It’s really emotional for an audience, whether you knew him personally or not.”
The Cast Reacts To The Loss Of Cory
We know that some of the cast members had a hard time separating how they were dealing with the passing of Cory, and how their characters were assigned to deal with the loss of Finn.
“I think that everyone in the cast is dealing with it in their own way because they all had there own relationships with him,” Mike said. “I don’t want to profess that I was as close to him as some of the younger people were on that show because they were an incredibly close unit. I thought they went through just a massive experience of fame, exposure and success, and I really think that they all handled it quite well.”
The episode will air on Fox at 9 PM, and will include the following songs:
“Seasons of Love” from Broadway’s Rent, performed by the entire cast
“I’ll Stand By You” by The Pretenders, performed by Mercedes
“Fire & Rain” by James Taylor, performed by Sam and Artie
“No Surrender” by Bruce Springsteen, performed by Puck
“If I Die Young” by The Band Perry, performed by Santana
“Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan, performed by Rachel Berry
