Spoiler alert: Stop reading if you haven’t watched the season premiere of ‘Scandal.’ It was a doozy!
Aren’t gossip reporters just the worst? With her secret finally out in the open, Olivia (Kerry Washington) spent the Oct. 3 season premiere of Scandal dodging the press, while simultaneously dealing with her daddy issues and trying to figure out what to do next. As gross as this may sound, the entire hour was about Olivia “handling” herself — and she did it brilliantly.
But the craziest part of Olivia’s plan was that it was actually based in truth, or at least a version of the truth that she, Mellie (Bellamy Young) and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) collectively decided the public should hear. The story they agreed on was that Liv and Fitz only slept together twice — once after the inauguration, and again after Fitz’s assassination attempt.
(Side note: That whole scene between the three of them was unreal. The way they chewed the scenery… it was like watching three Emmy Award-deserving beavers gnawing a dam into little tiny wood chips. In other words, it was perfect.)
But seriously, did you expect a plan formed in the first half of the episode to actually be the one Scandal stuck with in the end?
Fearing for their leader’s well-being, Liv’s team of loyal Gladiators — Harrison (Columbus Short), Abby (Darby Stanchfield), Quinn (Katie Lowes) and Huck (Guillermo Diaz) — stepped in and framed a White House aide, using out-of-context videos and e-mails to make her out to be Fitz’s mistress. And it worked!
Liv was understandably pissed — she gave them the whole “What did you do?” speech — but ultimately decided YOLO and moved on.
The BIGGER Twist
OK, here’s where things got bananas. During a heated conversation between Fitz and Mellie — as if any exchange the have isn’t heated — Mellie accused Fitz of being the one who leaked Olivia’s name.
And you know what?
The First Lady of the United States of Insanity was actually right!
It’s OK, you can pick your jaw up off the floor now.
(There was another twist that involved Cyrus [Jeff Perry] learning what really happened with Fitz and Jake [Scott Foley] in Iran, but since we have zero idea what that was, I’ll consider the leak to be this week’s biggest surprise.)
