Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) are the epitome of new parents on the Oct. 3 episode of Grey’s Anatomy: messy and sleep-deprived. They may have been accustomed to staying up all hours of the night for surgeries, but that is nothing compared to caring for a newborn. In short, it’s so nice to finally see Meredith and Derek be normal after so many years of heartbreak. (R.I.P. Lexie and Mark!)
The interns were feeling the same tired struggles while studying for their boards; Cristina (Sandra Oh) was laughing at the youngsters and even crawled into bed with Alex (Justin Chambers). She also taunted him over the fact that he hasn’t had sex with Jo in a long time. Oh Cristina, always good for a laugh.
Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) was also prepared for anything. She got a new hairdo and dressed up for work to try and impress Callie (Sara Ramirez) — but it didn’t work. Callie was still angry with her and continued to crack cheating jokes. She even refused to go to the couples therapy they agreed to. (Come on Callie, give a little!)
Meanwhile, Richard (James Pickens, Jr.) continued to recover from his injuries. He really needed a feeding tube, but he refused and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) just went with it. Meredith even showed up at the hospital with baby Bailey to check on Richard. Shane and Webber eventually had a “come to Jesus” meeting about the feeding tube and Shane did what needed to be done. Webber was starving so it was only a matter of time.
Shane (Gaius Charles) is such a mini-Webber, it’s not even funny.
Let’s face it, Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Cristina are not over. They will never be over. They had an elevator moment — always the Shonda Rhimes way. Cristina basically admitted she wasn’t ready to let go just yet. However, with Sandra Oh leaving, I can’t help but think that these two won’t make it out of the season together.
After two episodes of avoidance, Callie finally opened up to Arizona. She wished Arizona hadn’t told her she cheated. But she acknowledged that they weren’t happy and that it wasn’t a mistake. They need to move on, for now. This is good, Calzona fans. Callie and Arizona need a break to realize that they truly love each other.
April (Sarah Drew) was worried about passing her boards and Jackson (Jesse Williams) eased her worried heart. He was there when she got word the results were in. She let him check the results. She passed! Then, they had a very awkward high-five, almost hug.
Meanwhile, Jo (Camilla Luddington) was studying for her boards and Alex was suffering the consequences. Alex didn’t want to rush into things because “he has been with a lot of nobody’s but Jo is not a nobody.” He wants them to be special. I love it. He deserves some happy. Thankfully, Alex and Jo get their freak on at the end of the episode.
After Shane inserted Richard’s feeding tube, Meredith was once again at his bedside. What I thought would be a sweet father-daughter-like moment between the two ended in heartbreak. Richard confessed that he chose Meredith as his next-of-kin because he thought she could put emotions aside and make the right call. WHOA. Richard thought she wouldn’t be sentimental and just let him die.
He told her he chose the wrong person. And with that, my heart was shattered. Looks like Richard is the one who is dark and twisty now!
HollywoodLifers, what did you think of this week’s episode? Do you think Richard is serious? Will Callie ever forgive Arizona? Drop us a comment and let us know what you thought!
