So much happened on the Oct. 2 episode of ‘Nashville’ that I could barely catch my breath. A fan-favorite couple called it quits (for now), someone went behind Rayna’s back (how could they!) and new enemies infiltrated the country city. ‘Nashville’ is getting juicy, and I’m loving it!
After Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) used Rayna’s (Connie Britton) accident to boost her image and album sales, karma was bound to come back around and bite her. And it did. Juliette appeared on Conan to promote her music and all he asked about was Rayna. Rayna, Rayna, Rayna! Juliette was peeved to the max and on the warpath. To top it off, her album was getting outsold by The Best of Rayna James and the new guy at the record label, Jeff (Oliver Hudson), is not a Juliette fan.
But hey, Juliette and Avery (Jonathan Jackson) had a moment. He was being nice, she was being mean. It’s progress nonetheless.
Even though Rayna just got out of the hospital, she was ready to get back to work. She is my hero. She had a better meeting with Jeff (Oliver Hudson) than Juliette and was pumped about booking Scarlett (Clare Bowen) and Will (Chris Carmack) for her new record label, Highway 65.
Can we all take a moment to admire how amazing Rayna looks after four weeks in the hospital? This woman is flawless.
Maddie Gets Real, Will Is Wooed & Juliette Forms A Master Plan
Maddie (Lennon Stella) was still understandably pissed at Rayna for lying to her about Deacon (Charles Esten). She wanted answers, but as she pointed out: her mom is a liar, her dad is not her dad, and her real dad is an alcoholic. The girl has a point. I’m looking forward to seeing where this storyline is headed. I want it to be fully addressed and I want an epic confrontation between Rayna, Maddie, and Deacon. Is that too much to ask?
Meanwhile, Will got wooed by Jeff. Jeff told Will that he is the “new face of country music” and should come work with him. Jeff threw all his cards out on the table and Will took the bait. Even though Rayna had a heart-to-heart about protecting Will as an artist, Will is seeing green and wants the spotlight now.
Juliette, on the other had, tried to woo Jeff. To up her album sales, Juliette booked a television special back home in Alabama. She took Avery along with her. She said not to read into it, but I am. I am over the moon.
Juliette’s special was broadcast at her house in the trailer park in Alabama. Juliette thought she could just breeze through this interview without acknowledging her past, but when a former neighbor made her a quilt of old, adorable photos of her (so sweet), Juliette got upset. Avery asked her if she wanted to talk about it, but Juliette once again put up her Chinese wall. “I’m just trying to sell records,” she said. Gosh Juliette, just enjoy him.
Deacon’s Lady Problems
After an appointment that conveniently took Deacon by the site of the accident, Deacon returned to the place where he almost killed Rayna. Deacon called Rayna and they had their first face-to-face talk.
It was intense and I was not emotionally prepared.
He confessed to her that his hand may never allow him to play as good as before. He called her because he had no one else. “I didn’t want you to be the one, but you always have been.” My heart hurts for him. Rayna continued to twist the knife in Deacon’s back and breaks it off, for good. She doesn’t think they can save each other and she gives the ring back. My hopes are gone. This is not the end for Deacon and Rayna; it never will be.
The best moment of the entire episode came from Scarlett. Yes, really. After Deacon was being downright mean to her and everyone else, Scarlett told him off. And it was PRICELESS.
She called him an “angry, bitter old drunk” and rightfully so. However, Deacon fired back and told her Maddie was his daughter:
“Rayna didn’t want to tell me because I was a drunk. She was right. I didn’t deserve to be a father so I wasn’t. I don’t have Rayna. I don’t have my music. I got nothing. I am nothing. So you need to let me be.”
Let’s just address the fact that if Rayna had told Deacon about Maddie, maybe he would have cleaned up his act. He deserved to be a father then and he deserves to be one now.
New Enemies In Nashville
Jeff threw a party which required Rayna and Juliette’s attendance. After Jeff stole Will from Rayna, he was walking on thin ice with her. Rayna decided that she wanted to leave Edgehill Records and devote herself fully to Highway 65. This means war, Jeff. Don’t mess with Rayna James!
He also announced that he just signed up-and-coming starlet, Layla Grant (Ashley Peeples), and her single hit number one on iTunes over Juliette’s.
Jeff has to go, but I want Rayna and Juliette to get rid of him together.
Everything Else Going On In:
1. Gunnar (Sam Palladio) had some trouble writing lyrics. Scarlett’s best friend told him that heartbreak was the best motivation. He wrote and performed a beautiful song at the Bluebird about the loss of his brother. I can’t help but think now that Will is out of the picture that Gunnar could take his place alongside Scarlett.
2. Will’s ex-boyfriend, who works with Jeff, called a truce. He told Will that he won’t tell his secret, but just act normal around him. The guy doesn’t deserve to be pushed around every time Will sees him.
3. Juliette and Avery are the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. They balance each other out so perfectly. After the TV special, Juliette asked him, “Why do you care so much? It’s my heartbreak, not yours.” Avery replied, “Because we’re friends.” My heart is bursting with joy and I am wearing a smile that won’t go away. Team Averette, for the win.
