Jared Abrahams was arrested on Sept. 26 for hacking into Miss Teen USA, Cassidy Wolf’s computer, hijacking her webcam and taking secret photos while she undressed.
Cassidy Wolf is relieved after Jared Abrahams, 19, was identified as the man who took personal pictures of her in her bedroom by hacking into Cassidy’s personal webcam — and then tried to blackmail her with them. Cassidy told the Today show that, along with her feelings of relief, she also feels pity for Jared — and that she actually went to high school with him.
Cassidy Wolf Reveals ‘Mixed Emotions’ After Arrest
Six months ago, Cassidy, 19, called authorities identifying herself has “C.W.,” since she didn’t want to use her name. She explained that she had received an email with a photo of her naked in her bedroom attached.
The email said that the photo would become public unless she sent more. Now, the suspect in this horrible blackmail case has been identified and arrested.
Cassidy explained to the Today show’s Savannah Guthrie that when she first received the message and saw the attached photo, she was “screaming [and] bawling,” because she didn’t know what to do:
My computer light never came on, so I wasn’t aware. This person had been taking pictures of me in my room, changing clothes from putting on outfits, walking back and forth from the shower. I received an anonymous email from an anonymous person [who] basically was extorting me and blackmailing me. I saw that he had attached nude photos of me that he had taken in my bedroom.
She also feels pity for the suspect, she admitted in the interview:
He was young, my age, and I just think it’s sad that he chose to do this and has now kind of put himself in this big dilemma. It’s mixed emotions. I don’t think he realizes the consequences and the people that he hurt. He terrorized me and many girls for so long, and I just think that now it’s coming to real life for me as well that this person did this to me.
Cassidy Wolf’s Webcam Hacker Arrested
On Sept. 26, the arrest was made after Jared confessed he had 30 to 40 “slave computers,” as he called the other women’s computers that he controlled. He is said to have up to 150 total, according to a criminal complaint. Some of the victims are reportedly as young as 16 years old.
He surrendered at the FBI office in Orange County, FBI spokeswoman Lauren Eimiller said. Authorities raided his home in June and found images and videos of Cassidy and other women on his computer as well as hacking software.
On the Today show, Cassidy also revealed that she actually went to high school with Jared.
“It’s weird for me to be able to put a face to the person who did this to me and to know that it was somebody I went to high school with,” she told Savannah. She said that she remembers seeing him in the hallways but went to a large school so they never had any interactions.
Jared is currently out on $50,000 bail and on house arrest. While at his parents’ home, he can use a single desktop computer, that is installed with monitoring software, for school work only. The only time he can leave his home is for work, church, school, doctor’s appointments or meetings with his lawyer.
Miss Teen USA Plans To Use Reign To Help Other Young Women In This Situation
Cassidy really wants others to know that “it can happen to anybody,” and plans to use her new reign as Miss Teen USA 2013 to help other young women who don’t know how to get help.
“(My message is) to tell somebody because I know some of the girls who were involved in the case didn’t have the opportunity to talk to law enforcement and to get help,” she said on Today. “So it makes me feel really good that I was able to help them out as well as other people who could be going through the same thing.”
“It does happen,” she told CNN affiliate WPIX. “And there are ways to prevent it.”
It is so great to see Miss Teen USA using her reign for a topic that can help so many women. Considering everything she’s been put through, her bravery is remarkable.
