Jimmy steered his 72-foot catamaran to victory on Sept. 25 beating out Emirates Team New Zealand in the San Francisco Bay yachting competition. This is a huge deal and such an exciting win for Team USA!
Jimmy Spithill and his men should be very proud of themselves right now! The team owned by billionaire Larry Ellison, had a shaky start after being docked points for illegally modifying boats during warmups, but they prevailed as they raced around the Golden Gate Bridge on that windy day.
Oracle Team USA Wins America’s Cup
The catamarans, which cost over $100 million to make and upkeep, and race at speeds of up to 50 mph, compete in a race like no other.
When the Oracle won the race, just 44 seconds ahead of Team New Zealand, Larry jumped on board and sprayed the team with champagne.
Larry spoke out about the sport to CBS News and said how he is trying to revolutionize it: “We’re competing with other sports to get kids attention. We’ve got to make our sport exciting and we’ve got to modernize it … It can’t be unchanged since 1851.”
Captain James Tweets Excitement Over Win
The skipper couldn’t hold back how happy he was so he took to Twitter to tell everyone how proud he was of his team.
“On your own you’re nothing,” he tweeted. “But when you’ve got a team like this around you, they make you great.”
This win is being called one of the “greatest comebacks in sports history” since they were down seven points and managed to still win!
