The PTC — of which Miley’s own father, Billy Ray Cyrus, is an advisory board member — claims Miley’s performance ‘substituted talent with sex.’
At this point, it looks like Robin Thicke is the only person standing behind Miley Cyrus‘ raunchy performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards — and that’s only because he was literally standing behind her on stage. The latest group to cry ‘foul’ is the Parents Television Council, a conservative group known for targeting age-inappropriate content on TV.
“MTV has once again succeeded in marketing sexually charged messages to young children using former child stars and condom commercials — while falsely rating this program as appropriate for kids as young as 14,” Dan Isett, PTC’s president of policy, says in a statement. “This is unacceptable.”
This much is absolutely clear: MTV marketed adults-only material to children while falsely manipulating the content rating to make parents think the content was safe for their children. MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate ‘twerking’ in a nude-colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?
PTC board member Paul Porter also calls out Miley in his portion of the statement:
The Miley Cyrus/Robin Thicke performance simply substituted talent with sex. Viacom has a set of corporate broadcast standards that were obviously broken in this case for financial gain. While the performance was shocking to the audience, MTV approved it during the show run prior to the broadcast. Heads should roll at MTV.
To be fair, Lady Gaga‘s seashell bra-baring performance is also being targeted by the PTC, but Miley’s inclusion is far more interesting — mostly because her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, sits on the advisory board!
