Dr. Lori spills that one of the most common complaints she hears is dry skin under the arms. Some deodorants cause irritation, which can lead to dry skin and flakes.
Probably 50 percent of my patients have contact irritation from the deodorant they use. Most often, it’s too heavily fragrant. With deodorant — if there’s alcohol in it — it’s more irritating and that can cause problems. Also, if patients use it in the morning, immediately after shaving, it can be a problem.
Although it may seem counterproductive to apply deodorant at night and wash it off in the morning, it definitely helps with irritation.
I urge people to apply deodorant at night. I don’t have patients who have a problem doing it at night, because once they start using it at night, it really works on helping throughout the day. It decreases irritation, especially if you shave in the morning.
Believe it or not, you won’t have to re-apply deodorant after you shower in the morning if you continually use it at night.
Another key to preventing dry skin under your arms is using a deodorant with nourishing and hydrating ingredients. Dr. Lori says Sure Deodorant lasts all day (even after you shower) and contains aloe and Vitamins A & E to nourish and calm skin.
