Dwyane Wade’s ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches, might be in the middle of a mental breakdown right now. Either that or she just has no other way to get people to listen to her. The former basketball wife staged an impromptu sit-in on July 19 outside of the Daley Center in Chicago, Ill., protesting for her rights as an ex-wife and the mother of Dwyane’s two children.
“NBA Miami Heat Star Mother Of His Children On The Streets,” read the sign Siohvaughn clutched while also ranting about “$90 million contracts” and “houses on the water,” according to Deadspin. Siohvaughn was set up outside of the Daley Center, a building where most of the county’s civil lawsuits are heard.
Though Siohvaughn’s appearance and sign gave the impression that she was literally homeless, it was reportedly just for dramatic effect — she is really just trying to get people to see her side of the story.
On July 9, Siohvaughn filed a lawsuit against Dwyane — who signed an enormous $107 million contract with the Miami Heat in 2010 — arguing that he was not giving her the agreed-upon cut of proceeds from his many endorsement deals.
When the couple divorced in 2008, Dwyane was given full custody of their two children, Zaire and Zion, and a joint bank account was set up for Dwyane to deposit a portion of his endorsement money into for Siohvaughn. She claims he has not been holding up that end of the bargain.
Apparently the lawsuit was not a big enough gesture, hence the public protest.
It might be easy to call Siohvaughn crazy, but if it’s true that Dwyane has been avoiding making his payments and that she’s been unable to pay her mortgage and insurance like the lawsuit claims, then we actually have to sympathize with her. If Siohvaughn is telling the truth, not only is she without her two children, but her ex-husband is hanging her out to dry.
And in a case like this, where Dwyane is an enormous superstar and Siohvaughn is a little known, spurned ex-wife, perhaps making a dramatic scene is the only way to gain attention and sway public opinion.
For her sake, we hope this bizarre matter gets resolved, if for no other reason than the sake of Dwyane and Siohvaughn’s two children. What do you think, HollywoodLifers? Let us know!
