The ‘Good Morning America’ host was given a moving tribute — with an introduction from Michelle Obama — at the 2013 ESPY Awards.
Some of the biggest names in sports were at the 2013 ESPY Awards on July 17 to honor superstar athletes — but by far, the most emotional, touching moment of the night was when Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts was given the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, honoring her for her inspiring career and brave fights against breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome [MDS].
Robin Roberts At The 2013 ESPY Awards
Introduced by Michelle Obama via video, LeBron James came out on stage to present Robin with her award. But before Robin gave her speech, the award show played an emotional tribute video — narrated by Tom Cruise — that highlighted all of her many career achievements as a journalist and broadcaster, as well as her courageous battle against cancer and MDS, which is a blood and bone marrow disease.
Despite her many health struggles, which forced her to take a leave of absence from Good Morning America while she went through treatment, Robin’s spirit remained upbeat. She was even willing to share her emotional journey with GMA’s viewers, which was showcased in the video. “I believe everything happens for a reason,” she said. “I do.”
She looked absolutely stunning as she accepted her award, shining in jewelry from Tamsen Z. In her acceptance speech, she thanked her family, friends, and fans for all of their support and love during her treatment: “I didn’t find that strength on my own — it’s a quality that grew with every word of support.”
She emotionally spoke about her late mother and said how she was always taught to look at the message in any mess, because everyone has something. (That’s so powerful.)
Are you excited Robin was honored for her courage, HollywoodLifers?
