Cory Monteith‘s body was released to his mother, Ann McGregor, on July 16, and she held a viewing at the hospital with Cory’s girlfriend, Lea Michele, 26, and his older brother, Shaun Monteith. Read on to find out more details.
Cory’s mother decided to cremate his body in Vancouver after the viewing.
His father, Joe Monteith, who is divorced from Cory’s mom, told TMZ he was not invited to the last-minute viewing. He said he was “totally devastated” when he heard the news that Cory’s body had been cremated before he could say goodbye.
Joe told the gossip site, “I always loved both my sons and am going to miss Cory very, very much. I’m saddened at the fact that I couldn’t have been there to see my son before he was cremated.”
Cory died from a fatal combination of heroin and alcohol. The Glee star’s body was found in a Vancouver hotel on July 13.
Cory’s dad said he was “shocked” when he found out about Cory’s heroin use.
Cory’s father, Joe, flew in from St. John’s, New Brunswick when he heard the news of Cory’s death, but he never got a chance to say goodbye. At least Joe can take comfort in the fact that he and Cory reuinted in 2009 for the first time in 17 years.
In an interview in 2011, Cory said of his formerly estranged father: “We’d spoken maybe three or four times [during that period] and he reached out to me on Facebook. I couldn’t shut the door, so I got on a plane.”
“He greeted me at the airport, and [Joe and stepmother Yvette] were so happy, they were almost crying. It was a good time.”
It’s so sad that Joe didn’t have a chance to say a proper goodbye to Cory.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Cory’s family and friends during this sad time.
