So sad. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his wife Lyudmila announced on June 6 they are divorcing after nearly 30 years of marriage. Did an alleged mistress have anything to do with the split?
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his wife Lyudmila made the surprising announcement of their divorce on state television after attending a ballet performance at the Kremlin on June 6.

“It was our joint decision,” Vladimir said in a statement, according to CBS News.
“I don’t like publicity and flying is difficult for me,” Lyudmila, who never traveled with Vladimir on his frequent trips, said.
“We practically never saw each other. To each his own life,” Putin further said in a televised announcement of their divorce.
Lyudmila added, “We will eternally be very close people. I’m thankful … that he supports me.”
Vladimir Putin’s Alleged Mistress
The Russian President reportedly had an affair with Alina Kabayeva, his alleged mistress, in 2010. However, there’s no evidence that this reported relationship put any sort of strain on his marriage to Lyudmila. The alleged mistress, a former Olympic gymnast, was featured on the cover of Russian Vogue in January 2011.
Reps for both Alina and Lyudmila denied the allegations of an affair, but a St. Petersburg wedding planning firm claimed they had been contacted to plan the couple’s wedding in 2008. Alina gave birth to a son in 2009, though the father has never been identified.
The Putins married on July 28, 1983, and have two daughters, Maria and Yekaterina.
