Sometimes a musician can’t be successful without a little emotional strife. That seems to be the case for Rod Stewart, 68, who revealed that he and his wife Penny Lancaster, 42, broke up while explaining the inspiration behind a song on his new album, Time.
“I cover Tom Waits’ ‘Picture In a Frame’ on my new album,” the “Hot Legs” singer told the Australian magazine, Life. “Penny and I broke up for two weeks and the song is about that time,” Rod admits (though we’re not sure if he’s aware that the cover song probably isn’t actually about him). Rod and Penny have been married for about six years, but Rod did not specify when he and Penny separated.
We’ve always known the 68-year-old singer is a romantic at heart and even while he was separated from Penny he held onto the hope that they’d get back together. “I asked her for a photo of herself in a frame so that I could see her when I went to bed and when I woke up.”
Fortunately for Rod, he didn’t have to look at the framed picture for long — he and Penny reunited after two weeks of separation. But, he insists, the experience made him reflect and gave him new perspective on love.
“I have always loved women, won some, lost some, but it’s not about the magic touch, it’s about being a better person and a good listener,” Rod says, even though everybody knows the 80s heartthrob has “the magic touch.”
Rod is obviously no stranger to love — or breakups. His marriage with Penny is his third, and that’s not counting his seven-year relationship with model Kelly Emberg. Besides Alistair, 7, and Aiden, 2, the two children he has with Penny, Rod has five other children — Kimberly, 33, Sean, 32, Ruby, 24, Renee, 20, and Liam, 19. Based on his long history with love, Rod also had some romantic advice for the kids.
Rod concludes by saying that wisdom and experience are essential to having a lasting relationship: “Marriage is supposed to be a unison by two people,” he says. “I thought I was ready but I wasn’t. I’m against any of my kids marrying before 30.”
Good thing, Kimberly Stewart’s 33, right Harry Styles?
