Everybody has their favorite Game of Thrones character: There’s Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), the mother of dragons; Jon Snow (Kit Harington), the “bastard”; or even Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey), the mean girl of King’s Landing. Yes, you’ve seen your favorite characters a thousand times — but have you ever seen them in real life? You might be surprised to learn just how different they look.
I’d say the ladies are more unrecognizable out of costume than the lords, especially Emilia and Lena. The brunettes look nothing like their light-haired counterparts, Daenerys and Cersei. Carice van Houten also bears little resemblance to the menacing Melisandre — but maybe that’s just because she actually smiles in real life.
It’s also fun seeing Westeros’ warrior princesses — Arya Stark and Brienne of Tarth — out of costume, as Maisie Williams and Gwendoline Christie look much cuter when they trade their sharpened swords for sharpened heels.
The guys of the Game may look pretty much the same, whether they’re in or out of costume, but it’s still fun seeing their real-life personalities shine through on the red carpet. Kit is a lot less grim than Jon, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau looks — OK, fine, he’s still as impossibly handsome and rugged as Jaime Lannister.
Peter Dinklage, meanwhile, looks much better without the scar Tyrion picked up during the Battle of Blackwater — and in the real world, he actually gets the respect he deserves. (Emmy Awards are pretty much the crowns of Hollywood.)
