A shocking video has surfaced, featuring the massive crash at Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 23. At least 33 people were injured when cars crashed just yards away from fans, sending debris into the crowd, including a tire! Trust us, the video is not for the faint of heart.
The crash happened during the last lap of the Daytona Nationwide Series COPD300 race as Kyle Larson’s car got catapulted from the crash, flying into the catch fence, which separates the track from tens-of thousands of fans.
Footage filmed by fan Tyler Andersen, 16, shows a tire getting thrown into the crowd, hitting a woman in the audience, and dozens of fans wailing their arms in the air for emergency relief!
“It was like a war zone there,” Terry Huckaby, a fan whose brother was injured, told Dan Wetzel of Yahoo! Sports. “When the car hit, debris went everywhere. Tires flying over our head.”
“I looked over and saw a hole in the fence, and looked behind me and saw a tire, a man under a tire and there were people screaming where’s my kid and the emotion was running high there,” said Tyler.
“The smoke and the debris in front of me, it was nothing like I’ve ever seen before,” he added. “I’ve watched Nascar a lot of times and this is just not supposed to happen.”
“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans,” Joie Chitwood, president of the Daytona International Speedway said. “Following the incident, we responded appropriately according to our safety protocols and had emergency medical personnel at the incident immediately.”
