Lindsey Vonn Injury

The skiing champion suffered a frightening crash on Feb. 5 in an accident that tore two knee ligaments and will require reconstructive surgery. With the Winter Olympics just a year away in Russia, she’s determined to make a full recovery to compete.

Lindsey Vonn tumbled down an Austrian skiing course during the Alpine World Ski Championships on Feb. 5 when she crashed while competing in the super-G event. The crash caused the Olympic champion to suffer from two torn knee ligaments, and abruptly ended her skiing season.

The injuries require Lindsay to undergo reconstructive surgery on her knee.

Kyle Wilkens, the United States ski team’s medical director, said she tore the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in her right knee, according to the New York Times. She also has a tibial fracture in her shin. Even though the team revealed she wil be out for the rest of the season, they expect her to compete in the 2013-2013 World Cup season, which starts in October, and then the Sochi Olympics in February 2014.

Lindsey will fly back to Vail, Colo. for the surgery on her knee, U.S. Ski Team physician William Sterett said.

“She’ll be heading back to Vail and I will be doing surgery on her knee early next week,” he told The Associated Press on Feb. 6. “Lindsey is doing well. She’s in good spirits.”

Lindsey Vonn Releases Statement After Her Accident

“First off I want to say thank you to the amazing medical staff that cared for me,” Lindsay Vonn said in a statement. “I plan on returning to Vail as soon as I can to have the necessary surgeries. I am also grateful to my fans for the the outpouring of support, which has really helped me stay positive. I can assure you that I will work as hard as humanly possible to be ready to represent my country next year in Sochi.”
