‘Pretty Little Liars’ Recap: Spencer Learns Toby Is ‘A’ — Season 3 Episode 16 – Hollywood Life

‘Pretty Little Liars’ Recap: Spencer Discovers The Truth About Toby

Plus, another suspect in Alison's murder comes to light. Yes, another suspect. Some anniversaries end with a romantic candlelit dinner; others end with a girl learning that her boyfriend has been secretly terrorizing her friends for the past three years. Sadly, Spencer (Troian Bellisario) experienced the latter on the Sept. 22 episode of Pretty Little Liars, as she finally discovered that Toby (Keegan Allen) is actually a member of the "A" team. He may look damn good in a towel, but Toby looks real bad in a hoodie.

He’s been playing Spencer like a fiddle for months, but the second he got sloppy, it was all over. After accidentally dropping a key next to Hanna (Ashley Benson) and leaving his bogus I.D. card for the Radley Sanitarium out in plain sight, Spencer finally confronted him. Even though he didn’t actually respond to her, it was still one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the show’s history. I forgot Spencer even knew how to cry!

Of course, Toby’s big reveal wasn’t the only jaw-dropping moment of the night. Let’s take a little trip to the Montgomery household, shall we?

Aria’s ‘Misery’

The flu kept Aria (Lucy Hale) bedridden this week, and apparently she chose to medicate herself with a big-ass dose of Vitamin “A,” because she was paid a hazy visit by none other than Alison (Sasha Pieterse). And for the first time in three seasons, I honestly started to question whether or not Ali could still be alive. How else would she be able to tell Aria about blackmailing Byron (Chad Lowe), and suggest that Spencer needs to keep a closer eye on Toby? What is happening?!

Following that trip down potentially-dead-friend lane, Meredith (Amanda Schull) revealed that she’d been drugging Aria to keep her asleep. (Oh, did I forget to mention that Meredith was squeezing glass and blood was dripping down her hands? That part is pretty important.) Anyway, Aria tried to escape, but Meredith caught up to her and knocked her unconscious in the middle of the living room. Hanna and Emily (Shay Mitchell) came to help, but it wasn’t long before they were trapped in the basement right along with her.

That’s when Byron came home, but instead of giving Meredith what she had coming, he dropped a major truth bomb on the girls: He wasn’t the last person to see Alison alive — Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) was! Or at least he thinks she was.

The plot thickens…

Caleb & Paige’s Unlikely Alliance

After overhearing Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) making a sketchy phone call, Hanna asked Emily if she could follow him for a little bit; and it turns out the formerly hefty one had every right to be suspicious, as Caleb went on a secret meeting — with Paige (Lindsey Shaw)! Apparently they’re growing concerned about their significant others, and they want to do step in and stop “A” themselves.

Yeah, like that will end well.

What did you think of this week’s crazy episode? Do you believe that Byron didn’t hurt Alison? Do you think Meredith is really gone for good? And was that Alison, in the flesh, visiting Aria? Drop me a comment with your thoughts and theories!
