Close to 30 people are believed to be dead after the tragic shooting that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14 — and 20 deceased victims are children. The shaken survivors recalled the terrifying moments when what is believed to be nearly 100 rounds of ammunition.
One man recalled how his younger sister became aware of the shooting when she heard bullets over the school’s intercom system.
“It really started when she heard gunshots and screams on the intercoms,” the unidentified relative told MSNBC. “She heard screams. They were hiding in a tiny closet all bundled up. They were hearing screams and it was horrible.”
When the police arrived, “they were told to hold hands and close their eyes,” he said. “What was in there must have been very gruesome.”
The school went on lockdown immediately after reports of shots fired happened just after 9:30 a.m. One little girl revealed the terrifying moment she was hiding out in the gym.
“I was in the gym and I heard like seven loud booms,” she told NBC Connecticut news. “And the gym teachers told us to go into the corner so we all huddled. I kept hearing these booming noises,” she said.
‘”We all started crying so all the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us,” the girl added. “Then a police officer came in and told us to run outside.”

Parents Frantically Ran To The School
The students were locked inside classrooms while the school was on lockdown until they were safely evacuated to a nearby fire station. Parents could pick up their kids at the station with proper identification.
“It was horrendous,” parent Brenda Lebinski said, who rushed to the school to see her daughter, who is in third grade. “Everyone was in hysterics — parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don’t know if they were shot, but they were bloodied.”
But for the more than 20 sets of parents, they had to face the most devastating news of their lives — their kids were not coming home. Parents were still inside the school on the evening of Dec. 14 for grief counseling in the wake of the terrible tragedy.
Our thoughts are with the victims’ families during this difficult time.
