Mother Gets 35 Years For Leaving Son, 2, To Die In Hot Car
A Kentucky mom who left her two-year-old son to die in a boiling hot car was finally brought to justice on Sept. 26. Read on for the shocking details.
Mollie Shouse, 29, was more concerned about taking drugs than caring for her own son. At least, that’s what a Louisville, Ky. jury declared in August when she was found guilty of murdering her two-year-old son.
Mollie was found guilty of murder after she left her son in a boiling hot car, with temperatures of more than 150 degrees. while she passed out in her apartment after taking drugs.
Jefferson Circuit Judge Olu Stevens said the mom not only showed no remorse for her son’s death, she also continued to lie to police and investigators.
“You have to take responsibility for this,” he said. “You are responsible for this life that is no more. I didn’t see anywhere… where you showed remorse for what your child went through, what he suffered at your hands.”
Prosecutor Erin McKenzie said Mollie deliberately left her son in her car so she could get high, and knew the kind of danger she was putting her two-year-old in — and refused to ignore it.
“She chose to get high and it was convenient for her to leave him in the car to do so,” she said after the sentencing. “The car seat was a babysitter for her.”
35 years is believed to be the highest sentence for leaving a child in a hot vehicle. She will be eligible for parole in 20 years.
