‘The Voice’ Recap: 16-Year Old Avery Wilson Leaves The Coaches ‘Floored’

The beginning of week two of ‘The Voice’ ended with a bang with Avery. It’s too bad a lot of the talent that came before him wasn’t up to par!

The Voice kicked off its second week tonight, continuing with the show’s trademark blind auditions. With news that season four will see Shakira and Usher swiveling where Christina Aguilera and Cee -Lo Green once sat out in the air, watching tonight felt a little bizarre. It didn’t help that there wasn’t much outstanding talent to take my mind off the news. That is, until Avery Wilson took the stage.

Standout Auditions

We have to start at the end of the episode because 16-year-old novice Avery blew everyone who came before him right out of the water. It was clear that Avery was untrained, but his vocal performance on David Guetta and Usher‘s “Without You” was so outstanding, it didn’t matter. He had the entire group of coaches vying for his choice, but it was Cee Lo who, after rightly noting the “infinite possibility” in Avery’s voice, snagged the singer for his team.

The artist who kicked off the show, Melanie Martinez, was another standout of the evening. The 17-year-old photographer wowed the gentlemen coaches with her really cool interpretation of Britney Spears‘ “Toxic.” I couldn’t help but wonder if Christina didn’t turn simply because of song choice! After the men battled it out for Melanie, she wound up choosing Adam Levine, whom she felt would let her “express her creativity.” I hope she’s right!

But What About The Rest?

My fellow Voice fans, I won’t lie: I didn’t get too excited by many of the other singers who graced the stage tonight. But let’s talk about them anyway!

Beyond Melanie, Team Adam took home Brian Scartocci, who crooned “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder. I thought Brian had a bit of a weird tone to his voice, but his story was quite sweet and I wish him well. LaGuardia High School student Alessandra Guercio joined Adam’s team, too, after a tepid performance of Miley Cyrus‘ “The Climb.” Adam was correct when he noted that her voice has “some inexperience” and I hope he’s able to help her polish her rough edges. 15-year-old Adanna Duro also joined Adam’s team, but since we only got to see her sing for, literally, 20 seconds, I don’t have much to say about her.

Team X-Tina took home what I thought was the night’s worst performance: The married duo Beat Frequency, who performed the most bizarre rendition of Katy Perry’s “E.T.” I’ve ever seen. I don’t want to be mean, so I’m going to be brief: Yikes. Christina also added 16-year-old Paulina to her team. Not the best night for Team X-Tina.

Blake Shelton added some pretty expected talent to his team tonight. Liz Davis, she of the powerful country voice, joined the team everyone watching knew she would the minute she started singing “Here For The Party” by Gretchen Wilson. Team Blake also added youngster Kelly Crapa, who we didn’t get to see much of either.

Teem Cee Lo walked away with the star of the night (maybe, season) with Avery. He also wound up with Alaskan YouTube star JR Aquino who sang “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars with more vibrato than necessary and a weak enough falsetto to make me wonder why 45 million people are watching his videos online. Nicholas David also joined Team Cee Lo, after singing “Stand By Me” in exactly the way Aaron Neville would.

What did you think of tonight’s group of talent, HollywoodLifers? Did Avery wow you, too? Is there someone I ragged on who you want to defend? Let me know in the comments below!
