Ashton’s ad has come under fire because of racist content — find out what happened and check out the spot!
Popchips claims the video was intended to poke fun at the 34-year-old’s flailing love life and “to provoke a few laughs and was never intended to stereotype or offend anyone” but many viewers are up in arms about Ashton’s decision to dress up in stereotypical garb and use an Indian accent, the Daily Mail reports.
Indian-descended rap group Das Racist tweeted “What’s with the racist brownface video you talentless, pretending to care about sex trafficking piece of s***” at Ashton, but never received a response.
Neither Ashton nor Popchips have offered a formal apology for the “racist” ad, but a company spokesman says, “At Popchips we embrace all types of shapes, flavors and colors, and appreciate all snackers, no matter their race or ethnicity. We hope people can enjoy this in the spirit it was intended.”
