The team gets some serious style points thanks to the designer, who teamed up with Adidas to craft the Olympic kit — get all the details here and check out the uniforms!
Fashion meets function! Stella McCartney may be known for feminine, high-fashion vegan creations, but the British designer had the honor of crafting the Olympic uniforms for Team GB. Stella teamed up with Adidas on the designs, which incorporated the British flag.
“The first place to start on a project like this is to look at the Union flag,” McCartney said. “For me it’s one of the most beautiful flags in the world and it was important for me to stay true to that iconic design but also to modernise it and present it in a contemporary way. Ultimately, we wanted the athletes to feel like a team and be proud with the identity we created.”
While the uniforms are sleek and chic, the designer has fallen under criticism for not incorporating enough red, (one of the main national colors), into the designs. She took to twitter to defend her decision, saying, “I see many feel as strongly about the Union flag as I do! The design actually uses more red & shows more flag than any Team GB kit since ’84.”
With the Olympics mere months away, the kit, made up of uniforms for 500 Olympic and 350 Paralympic participants was unveiled by athletes, (along with the designer herself), at the Tower of London.
