Groundhog Day Shocker: Did Punxsutawney Phil See His Shadow?

Is winter nearing its end, or do we have six more weeks in store? Science is complicated, so let’s just ask a groundhog!

More than 18,000 people in Punxsatawney, Pa., clamored to catch a glimpse of the world’s most famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil on Feb. 2 — but what did he see? According to Mike Johnston, the vice president of Phil’s Inner Circle, the furry prophet saw his shadow and there are six more weeks of winter on the way. Of course, if the winter continues to be as mild as it’s been — it was a “chilly” 63 degrees here in NYC yesterday — I think we’ll all survive.

And in case you’re wondering how Phil’s prediction is determined, brace yourself — it’s even more insane than you could have ever imagined:

Mike explains that Phil uses “a chirp and a click and a wink of an eye” to inform the Inner Circle’s president about his vision. That said, his accuracy is reportedly only 39 percent.

So, you know, there’s that.
