The FBI are investigating the death of a newborn that was found aboard a Carnival cruise ship! What happened?
An employee of the Carnival Dream ship made a shocking discovery on Oct. 12 — the body of a dead child! The infant was discovered in a guest cabin, and the FBI’s Evidence Response Team was activated.
Special Agent Dave Couvertier told The Associated Press that they are working with port authorities on the investigation. “We have been coordinating with Carnival Cruise Line which has been fully cooperative,” he wrote.
The 20-year-old mother of the baby was detained. According to The Today Show, she told law enforcement that she never knew she was pregnant until she gave birth!
It was concluded that the baby had died prior to the ship’s arrival in St. Maarten, so the Dutch authorities handed the case over to the FBI. No charges have been filed, but the questioning of the mother continues.
“Due to the international and jurisdictional aspects we are still working on obtaining facts and specific details about the incident,” the agent wrote.
The Today Show reported that Carnival’s head cruise director wrote a statement saying that the stewardess who discovered the baby should be in our thoughts. “Carnival is providing her with all the care and help she needs,” he wrote. “In my 25 years at sea it is one of the saddest situations I have ever heard.”
