Is devoting yourself to the job the best way to handle your pain?
Two days after announcing her divorce from husband Marc Anthony, you wouldn’t find Jennifer Lopez at home crying into her whiskey. No, the American Idol judge decided to distract herself by throwing herself into her work, giving it her all and acting like the consummate professional during a fashion photo shoot. Is this the right way to handle your pain after a big breakup?
J. Lo stood gamely through a 6-8 hour shoot for her Kohl’s line at MILK Studios in Los Angeles July 17, and insiders say she held her head high for the entire day without so much as a sniffle.
“Jennifer put on a very strong face and good attitude the entire day,” the eyewitness on the shoot told HollywoodLife.com exclusively. “She was 100% polite and not sad at all. During the prep and during the shoot, we played her music and other upbeat stuff.”
Adds the source, “The whole session was very ‘hurry up and wait’ because she was getting her make up, hair and costume changes done, which took forever. She was on the phone a bunch, texting and making calls”
Putting on a happy face when you’re breaking inside is one of the hardest things to do in the world, but J. Lo is an actress (slash singer, dancer, reality star) after all. But are there other things she could be doing to make herself happy besides working?
Actually, not really. Of course you want to be around friends for support and to give yourself some ‘me’ time to heal and self-reflect on where the relationship went wrong, and how you can avoid the same mistake the next relationship around, but work is the best quick healer.
Focusing on the job not only distracts you, but it improves your chances of a promotion at the same time. Chances are you won’t immediately want time to think about your ex, so working a ton is actually a cure.
Plus, it beats a quickie fix like drinking, which only temporarily relieves your pain but actually causes you more in the long run. So pull a J. Lo if you’re going through a split and work, work, work. Also do like the 41-year-old did, and put on a happy face while you’re doing so. You might even manage to convince yourself it’s true.
