As temperatures rise, kids across the country will head to their backyard pool to cool off — and dozens will drown, tragic new statistics reveal.
“Parents need to be aware that these pools can present the same risks for drowning, especially for young children, as in-ground pools,” study author Dr. Gary Smith says.
Dr. Smith’s report, released by the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio reveals shocking truths about the safety of kiddie pools.
Between 2001 and 2009, 209 children died in kiddie pools — that’s one every five summer days.
Of the fatal accidents, 94 percent involved children under five; 81 percent of incidents were in the summer; 73 percent of drownings took place at home; and in 43 percent of cases, there WAS adult supervision.
Do these stats frighten you, HollyMoms? What precautions will you take this summer?
