Reeve Boleware, 12, shot Jeffrey Reese, 38, at least once behind the ear during a domestic incident at their family home in Sunbury, Ohio on April 23.
Reeve then called the police to confess to the killing and explain how he was trying to stop Jeffrey from hurting him and his mom Wendy.
He told the 911 operator, “I’m 12 years old. I just shot my stepdaddy. He was threatening me and my mom.”
Wendy then took the handset to claim Jeffrey had threaten to kill them both.
When police arrived at the scene they found the victim lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to hospital, but died later that day.
Despite his claim of self defense, Reeve has been arrested and charged with murder. If the charges aren’t dropped, he’ll be tried at a juvenile court.
Meanwhile, shocked relatives of the victim have portrayed Jeffrey as a “gentle” man. His cousin Rachelle Wilson tells ABCNews.com, “None of us have ever seen him get mad or violent. He does not have a violent past.”
