Should You Meddle In Your Man's Family Life Like Khloe Kardashian Did With Lamar?

The Love Consultants — professional matchmaker and dating coach Matt Titus and his wife, author and media personality Tamsen Fadal — take on whether you should get involved with your partner’s family drama, like Khloe Kardashian did with Lamar Odom and his dad!

The season premiere of Khloe and Lamar dealt with a very sensitive topic. Lamar Odom has been estranged from his father for years but Khloe Kardashian felt the need to try to get them to work things out. This caused a huge fight! asked The Love ConsultantsMatt Titus and Tamsen Fadal, to weigh in — is it ever worth it for couples to get so involved with their partner’s family life?

Matt’s Take:

If you want relationship disaster, jump into the middle of a dispute between your significant other and their family! Great thinking Khloe — why don’t you tell Lamar how to play basketball, too!

There is no way that Khloe can understand the intricate family dynamic between Lamar and his father. Family conflict never breeds rational thinking or logical reactions. It’s usually filled with knee-jerk emotional responses, coupled with intensified and judgmental views. In-laws are looked upon as “outsiders” and have absolutely no place in what often turns out to be a no-win conflict between estranged family members!

Khloe should be more of a passive observer. That means she can help Lamar with his relationship with his father, Joe Odom — but only if and when he asks for her help! She should be respectful of the relationship Lamar has with his father, no matter how dysfunctional it may be. Because she has NO PLACE in it!

Khloe can’t possibly empathize with Lamar regarding the abandonment he feels he experienced when his father left him as a child to pursue what appears to be a career in drug abuse. And here’s why: Khloe came from a loving and supportive family that always had her best interest at heart.

So how can she possibly relate to Lamar’s dicey — and painful — situation?

Tamsen’s Take:

Khloe really cares about her husband. Her advice about her father-in-law comes from a place of good intentions and caring. Khloe loves Lamar and just wants him to be happy. If she can help repair Lamar’s relationship with his father, it would make her feel like she is bringing an element of family back to Lamar’s life. That’s what good spouses try to do.

I think marriage is about completing your partner’s life in every way — especially if it has to do with helping the one you love heal old and deep family wounds. I love the fact that she cares enough about Lamar to assist him in repairing his relationship with his father.

It’s never too late to offer help that could repair a family connection, especially one as important as the relationship with a parent. Lamar’s dad is in a totally different place than when Lamar was a child. It looks like he deserves a chance at a new relationship with his son.

Khloe can and should help Lamar see his father as a different person — someone who has suffered and genuinely wants to form a bond with his son.

Go for it Khloe!!
