She and Jordan Bratman are headed for divorce court. It’s a shame their son is in the middle. They better keep it civil!
Just when you thought it was safe to check in on how Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman are doing, think again. The couple, who announced their separation in October, appear to be hunkering down for what appears to be a lengthy and bitter custody battle over their 2 1/2-year-old son, Max. According to the new issue of Star magazine, it looks like people are already taking sides, including, maybe, the law itself.
“Legally, it’s supposed to be equal rights,” Los Angeles trial lawyer Mark Geragos told HollyBaby.com exclusively. “There is a traditional bias towards mothers. That has changed somewhat over the years, but I don’t think the law is gender blind. All things being equal, the law sides more with the mother.” Having said that, though, Geragos also admitted that, “sometimes, a judge will bend over backward to treat a celebrity differently. But most family law judges are genuinely interested in the child’s welfare. Generally speaking, a family or juvenile court judge is there for a reason, because the want to be there for the kids.”
With all that in mind, Jordan is already planning his case. “Jordan knows he’s the much more hands-on parent and will fight [Christina tooth and nail for primary custody of Max,” an insider told Star. “He feels that if she truly cares for Max’s well-being, she’ll agree.”
After the well-documented series of fights the pair had before their split, however, we’re not so sure that’s very likely. Christina, 29, said back in October, “It wasn’t good for Max to witness our arguments.” Since then, she’s been traveling a lot to publicize her new movie, Burlesque, while Jordan, 33, has been the stay-at-home-dad taking care of Max. That hasn’t gone unnoticed by the other parents at Max’s preschool.
“He’s there every day and goes to almost all the parent-teacher meetings alone,” the insider continued. Meanwhile, “Christina floats in and out of Max’s life. She’s acting like an 18-year-old on spring break.” Wow — the singer really needs to get her priorities in order.
Part of that might have to do with her new relationship with Matthew Rutler, 25, a musician whom Christina met while filming Burlesque, where Matthew was a production assistant on set. Matthew’s motives, however, have come under suspicion. His group, The Nate Mott Band, writes on its website, “due to personal reasons Matthew Rutler our guitarist, will not be able to perform with the Nate Mott Band for the next series of shows.” Hmm. We wonder what those reasons could be. Maybe something to do with … dating Christina Aguilera?
“The more Jordan hears about Christina and Matthew,” the insider close to Jordan said, “the more determined he is to keep Max. He doesn’t want his son around his ex’s random new guy.” Well, we definitely don’t blame him! HollyMoms, when’s the right time to introduce your kids to the new love in your life?
