Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes says she’s writing a singing episode for later this season…but don’t expect the staff of Seattle Grace-Mercy West to become a glee club!
A musical episode is the last thing we’d ever expect from a medical drama like Grey’s Anatomy, but according to the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, the cast will soon be humming along to the same songs we’ve heard on the show’s soundtrack for years. However, before you judge too quickly, listen to what Shonda has in mind…it might not be as nuts as it seems!
“The comparisons to other musical episodes are too great, and we wanted it to be different,” she told TV Guide. “Nobody is going to be dancing and singing down the halls; that’s not our show. Our show is known for its music. I very much wanted to do something that was musical without being a musical.”
Shonda also said that unlike Glee, we’re not going to hear covers of Journey songs on Grey’s.
“Part of the way I figured out that we could do this was to take the songs that our show has made iconic and have them be sung by our cast members, as opposed to singing Broadway songs or singing some songs by a known artist,” she said. “We’re simply singing songs that Grey’s Anatomy has made famous.”
