OK, so it’s not going to win any awards, but this film was a lot of fun – and I’d definitely see it again!
So here’s the skinny on Step Up 3-D: masterpiece theatre it’s not, but it definitely brings drama, romance and comedy to the table. After hitting the film’s LA premiere August 2, I can tell you that it’s definitely a fun film-going experience!
Curly-haired hip-hop kid Moose (Adam G. Sevani)- who was also featured in the series’ second film – is back as a freshman at NYU with his BFF, Camille (Camp Rock‘s Alyson Stoner). He’s recruited by a tight-knit group of NYC street dancers called the Pirates including Luke (the gorgeous Rick Malambri) and Natalie (Sharni Vinson); the team goes on to battle some of the best hip-hop dancers in the world. See? Not rocket science, but good, frothy fun nevertheless!
And sure, all the characters were loveable and entertaining, but I was more excited to see how many So You Think You Can Dance contestants appeared in the film! Current season 7 all-star Twitch has a prominent role, as does breakdancer Legacy from season 6. Season 4 winner Joshua Allen is also featured, and many, many more appear as background dancers. See how many you can spot!
The only downside to the film is that the acting isn’t always up to par. But was I really expecting a fun dance movie to win an Oscar? Step Up 3-D is all about having fun, fantastic music, and mind-blowing dancing routines, so if you can appreciate those things, you can appreciate this movie. For those of you who love dance shows like SYTYCD or America’s Best Dance Crew, or are an aspiring dancer yourself, this film is a must-see! So head on over to the theater this Friday, August 6, and be prepared to enjoy an epic dance experience!
