You’ve seen her stylish suits on celebs like Nina Dobrev, now find out from the savvy designer herself how to shop for the perfect bikini and how to get beach ready in no time!

We got to catch up with Shoshanna Gruss, the women behind the flirty bikinis with an impeccable fit, and she shared all her secrets on swimsuit shopping, the latest bathing suit trends, and how to hit the beach in style. The designer recently teamed up with Venus and she was thrilled to share all of her expert tips — just in time for the big holiday weekend!

Shoshanna was one of the first designers to offer women a variety of options for fit and sizing, (they size their tops like bras), and she believes the most important thing when shopping for the perfect suit is finding one that really fits. “I felt so excluded from swimwear,” the designer admitted. “There were only three standard sizes, small, medium, and large, and I remember sneaking in to swap the bottom of one or the top of another. There was either this little triangle or my grandmother’s type of suit, and if you didn’t fit in to those three sizes you looked terrible!”

She says it’s important to try on as many suits and styles as you can so you can find one that works best for you. “Even from five or six years ago, there are so many new techniques, styles, and support systems built in to suits. Half the battle is getting out there and finding the right suit, you have to get yourself in the stores to try them on.”

Luckily, the designer understands how if you aren’t Gisele you may not always be up for swimsuit shopping and has some crucial tips to make the process easier. “Between the horrible lighting, tiny dressing rooms, and terrible mirrors many women put it off cause they’re so not up for it, but I always say go shopping the way you would go to the beach — you wanna feel good and you want to feel confident, so brush your hair, put on a little makeup, a little self-tanner, and get your body bikini ready! Even just taking off your socks, you have to feel as good as you’re gonna feel when you go on the beach.”

Shoshanna said her partnership with Venus was the perfect match, especially since the star thinks it’s most important to get your body ready not just for the beach — but for bikini shopping too! “You should have your body bikini ready all the time, especially when you’re looking for the perfect suit,” she said. “The Venus kit has all the tools you need to ger beach ready and it will leave your skin looking gorgeous and beautiful.” The designer said the kit, which comes with a trimmer, (she says it’s perfect for skimpy bikini bottoms!), while the razor, the Embrace, complete contours to a woman’s body. The kit also comes with Olay bikini moisturizer, making the kit the perfect package to throw in your bag for a quick get-away or touch-up on the go!

When you start your swimsuit shopping is also important — although it may be bikini season, the supply in the stores is totally picked over! “The best time to buy is before the season starts,” she said. While resort bikini’s get shipped out around the end of December, Shoshanna is a huge fan of ordering online. “You can try on your swimsuit in the privacy of your own home and that gives you the opportunity to get your body totally bikini ready.”

So, what can we expect to see this season? “Color wise, we’re seeing tons of brights and a lot of retro prints too, there’s gingham and eyelet,” Shoshanna said. “There’s a lot of 60’s and 70’s vibes in prints and stripes, and there’s beautiful embellishments and beading.” And, if you think you can’t pull off the new retro style, the designer says practically everyone can! “A lot of the retro styles have a fashion forward feel to them,” she said. “People are utilizing those styles to make very wearable bathing suits that offer a little more coverage than the typical bikini. If you find the right style for you it would look really beautiful, and you can also use it to cover some figure flaws you have. It’s perfect if you want that bikini feel but still want to be a little covered up.”

The designer said she understands the anxiety about stripping down in the sand, but if you flaunt your assets and feel confident you’ll look better than you ever imagined! “Half the battle is about feeling good about yourself and celebrating your body,” she said. “It’s not about focusing on your flaws, it’s about focusing on the parts that you feel great about!”
