Insert frown face here. Despite a steady and faithful following all season long, I believe that dark horse Lee is going to overtake Crystal Bowersox in the season finale.
It’s no secret that I’m rooting for Crystal Bowersox to win American Idol. The dreadlocked hippy mommy just rocks. Her voice is not only powerful, but in person she’s confident, strong and self-assured. She knows who she is both as an artist and as a person. But somehow, I believe the title she’s owned all season long is about to be ripped from her — exactly like the indignity of Adam Lambert placing second to Kris Allen in season 8.
Why do I say this? Her competitor, 24-year-old Illinois native Lee DeWyze, was the underdog until just recently. He wasn’t meant for greatness. Lee was a shy paint salesman with dirty fingernails who never thought he’d achieve his dream. And yes, there’s beauty in that. Lee knows what it means to take the American Idol journey — but that doesn’t mean he deserves to place first or have the judges’ undivided support for his sudden boost in confidence. This IS a singing competition, after all, right?
For all of you that think Crystal, 24, belongs in a coffee shop, I’ll say this. I would listen to her sing in a coffeehouse, a basement, a frat party or on a street corner. No matter where she is or what she sings, it’s going to be good.
If Crystal doesn’t win the show May 26, it will be a crime — but as we all know, s**t happens.
