Harry was a fantastic mentor on American Idol during Frank Sinatra week, and the latest contestant to get kicked off the Fox show thinks he’d make a great judge, as well!
Now that Simon Cowell is about to say goodbye to American Idol and start work on his new show, X-Factor, his replacement is definitely needed ASAP. Aaron Kelly, the latest contestant to get kicked off Fox’s hit singing competition, has a very clear idea of who should replace the cranky British judge: Harry Connick Jr.!
“Harry would be a really great replacement for Simon,” the 17-year-old singer said on a conference call May 6. “He would fit the bill perfectly. He’s very honest. I don’t know if he’d be interested, but in my opinion, he’d be a great Simon. He’s a great person to fill Simon’s spot.”
What a great idea, Aaron! Harry, 42, was definitely hilarious, made all the contestants feel at ease and MAY know a thing or two about music (we kid, he’s awesome). In fact, he was Aaron’s favorite mentor of the season!
“He was my favorite mentor,” Aaron, who got booted from the show May 5, admitted. “It was great to have a mentor that cared so much. It was such an honor to share the stage with him, and I felt really privileged to have him as a mentor.”
Either way, Simon, 50, and his potential replacement both gave young Aaron some much-needed advice. “Harry said I had a great voice, almost angelic. He said ‘You’ve got all the high notes, but go out and sing it without the high notes. Someone who can do that is a true artist.’”
But what did Simon say during their awkward onstage hug? “He asked me what I felt my best week was, and I said [during country week]. He said that’s when I really shined, so I have to figure out the artist I am and what kind of road I want to go down. Country is what I feel most content with.”
Watch out, Carrie Underwood — you’ve got competition!
