Kristen Stewart's Makeup Artist Spills About Her Joan Jett Look In 'The Runaways'!

The Runaways makeup department head Robin Mathews shows you how you can get Kristen Stewart’s rockin’ Joan Jett lids!

You’ve seen Robin Mathews’ work on Kristen Stewart before in New Moon as Bella Swan and now you’ll be able to see her skills when Kristen plays Joan Jett in The Runaways which hits theatres on Mar. 19. “The looks couldn’t be more different, but the funny thing is that Bella and Joan are both major beauty icons!” Robin says about her two roles. In the film, Kristen plays iconic Runaways frontwoman Joan Jett who’s just as remembered for her groundbreaking music as she is for her black hair and smoky eyes. “The Runaways were such pioneers with their makeup looks that it was imperative to us all to get it exactly right,” Robin says. “Every look in the movie is a recreation of actual photos of the real people,” Robin explains. “We used makeup to not only recreate the beauty aspect of the looks but to also sculpt the actors’ faces to look more like the people they were playing.”To get Kristen’s Joan look, “It’s all about black eye liner pencil. Apply generously and smudge away!” Robin says. “The key to getting it so worn in is to apply, smudge, then repeat. I like to use a small brush to smudge but you can also use a sponge tipped applicator or even a q-tip if you’re in a pinch,” she suggests. Some people had reported that Kristen slept in her makeup all the time in order to get that authentic rocker look but Robin denies this. “I was misquoted. One or two times, when Joan’s character was in the depths of the wear-and-tear from the rock and roll lifestyle, we applied eyeliner overnight — because it needed to look realistic for the film — but no other makeup was left on overnight,” Robin says. “No one should sleep in their makeup overnight. Kristen does not sleep in her makeup.” – Marta TopranCheck out this video for step-by-step instructions from Robin on how you can get Kristen’s rocker eyes using the Make Up For Ever products they used on set!
