It’s been nearly two years since Sarah Jessica Parker’s infamous mole mysteriously disappeared from her chin, but she finally decided to address what she calls “mole-gate,” Dec. 15 on the Late Show with David Letterman.
When the mole vanished during the summer of 2008 after SJP shot the first Sex and the City movie, fans wondered if its absence meant that there was a health issue. Thankfully, SJP is just fine; the fashionable star simply didn’t like the untrendy appendage and decided to have it removed by her plastic surgeon brother-in-law.
“I didn’t have strong feelings,” she explained. “I didn’t object to it. I just didn’t care for it. And I had about six free days when I could be bloody and stabbed and no one will care and honestly I didn’t think a thing about it and then apparently it turned into mole-gate.”
SJP isn’t the only one who hated her mole. 96-97% of mole removals are cosmetic, Dr. Lisa Zdinak, chief surgeon and medical director of Precision Aesthetics in Palm Beach, tells HollywoodLife.com.
“We’re born with moles and then they get a little bigger, and in some cases even grow larger when women go through hormonal changes, like pregnancy,” Dr. Zdinak explained. “People don’t like the way they look.”
Moles are typically removed one of two ways, says Dr. Zdinak: by cutting or shaving. (Gross!) She thinks SJP used the latter procedure because it’s way less invasive and typically only costs around $500.
“I think Sarah Jessica is embellishing a little about [being bloody and stabbed] for six days because she’s a pretty humorous lady,” Dr. Zdinak laughed.
SJP will always hold a special place in our hearts, with or without her mole, but some fans got upset that she got rid of her “signature” look.
“I was like, ‘My mole was my signature? Isn’t my brain my signature?'” Sarah Parker complained when she opened up to David Letterman. “For about the next 15 minutes I couldn’t hear anything because I thought I’d make a terrible mistake. Can they put it back on?”
