Canada Beats Sweden In Men’s Olympic Hockey Final

What a game! After defeating Team USA, Canada kept their momentum going in the gold medal game against Sweden — and they dominated with a 3-0 win!

Congrats to Canada — they are Olympic champions! The Canadians got out to a fast start and never looked back in the gold medal game on Feb. 23, enforcing their will to claim the top spot with a 3-0 victory over Team Sweden.

Vic Wild: US Snowboarder Wins Gold For Russia After Defecting With Wife

Traitor! US-born snowboarder Vic Wild notched his second gold medal at the Winter Olympics on Feb. 22. Unfortunately, he was competing for Russia, the native country of his snowboarder wife, Alena Zavarzina.

As of Feb. 22, the United States have claimed 27 medals at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, but they could have had 29. That’s because American snowboarder Vic Wild has now won two gold medals after marrying Russian snowboarder Alena Zavarzina and deciding to follow her to the Russian Olympic squad in 2011.

USA Hockey Heartbreak Continues: Team Loses Bronze Medal To Finland

The talented skaters from the United States just couldn’t recover from their emotional semifinals loss to Team Canada on Feb. 21, and a day later they were crushed by Team Finland, 5-0, in the Bronze Medal game.

Team USA’s Olympic dreams really ended when they lost 1-0 to Canada on Feb. 21, but the final nail was emphatically driven in by Team Finland in the Bronze Medal game on Feb. 22. The entire American team struggled as the Finnish squad played with pride and energy to the tune of a 5-0 score.

Mikaela Shiffrin Becomes Youngest-Ever Women’s Slalom Gold Medalist

Mikaela, 18, made history for America — and the world — by becoming the Olympics’ youngest-ever women’s slalom gold winner!

On the night of Feb. 21, American skier Mikaela Shiffrin took to the slopes for what was to be a historic run in her challenging and heart-racing event, women’s slalom. At just 18 years of age, the Eagle-Vail, Colorado, teenager beat skilled slalom champions Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany, 29, Tina Maze of Slovenia, 30, and  Marlies Schild of Austria, 32, to become the youngest gold medal winner in the history of the event. Yay!

Figure skaters toil their whole lives to hopefully one day get a shot at an Olympic medal, so of course tension runs high and disappointment is inevitable for all but three lucky and skillful women. Sarah Burke was only 29 years old when she died tragically after a training crash in Park City, Utah. Two years later, her friends on the Olympic team honored their fallen star with a beautiful tribute in Sochi.

The skiing community was brokenhearted when Canadian X Games star Sarah Burke died of a brain injury in January of 2012, and on Feb. 20 they honored her memory at the Sochi Olympic Games with a beautiful tribute that tugged on Sarah’s father’s — and the rest of the world’s — heartstrings.
