The top four of season three of The Voice took the stage for the last time together tonight before one unlucky artist was sent packing. But between Cassadee Pope, Terry McDermott, Nicholas David, and Trevin Hunte, did the right person go home?

The Music

Terry and Cassadee performed “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men, and it was a really great opening performance. Terry’s voice sounded like it was made especially to sing this song. Cassadee didn’t get much opportunity to show off until the very end, which was a shame.

Season two’s Juliet Simms stopped by to perform her new single “Wild Child”. I’ll admit that I didn’t watch season two, so I wasn’t familiar with Juliet. I was not expecting that voice to come out of that girl. The song was a pretty rollicking good time. I might make an iTunes purchase of it later tonight!

Another visit from a season two finalist, RaeLynn. She performed her new single “Boyfriend”. I wasn’t into this as much as I was Juliet. Maybe you were?

The final visitor from season two, Chris Mann, stopped by to belt out “Roads,” his new ballad. It was a perfectly fine performance, if a bit bland.

Nicholas and Trevin joined forces on Mariah Carey‘s “Hero,” which was such an odd song choice. The way each had to sing in a different octave was awkward, with the lower notes proving too low for Nick. There were moments where his voice just dropped out all together. Not a shining moment for a duo with one half who was about to be eliminated. Maybe nerves mucked it up?

The Results

–The first artist safe: Terry. Unless something insanely shocking happened and Cassadee was sent packing, Trevin or Nicholas had to be nervous at this point.

–The second artist safe: Cassadee. See?

–The final artist safe: Nicholas, meaning tonight is the end of the road for Trevin. This outcome felt pretty expected. For me, it came down to either Terry or Trevin to go home, and once Terry was saved first, I’d already prepared to see Trevin go.

It’ll be interesting to see what Trevin is able to do in the future. His voice didn’t always work with contemporary music that someone of his age would need to make to be successful, commercially. Hopefully coach Cee Lo Green can mentor him further and find the perfect spot for him in today’s music landscape.

As The Voice inches closer to its finale, the top four were sent to their hometowns for touching family visits before they took the stage to give it all they’ve got. It was their last chance to wow America before the finale. While it’s obvious that Cassadee Pope will be making it to the top three next week, the identities of the two gentlemen who will be joining her is less clear.

Trevin Hunte

Trevin Hunte fought tonight with “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler. He dedicated his performance to the kids at his middle school, which is somehow in Georgia and not New York as I felt we’d been led to believe all season long. Earlier in the day, I’d written that Trevin needed to stick closely to the power ballads if he hoped to advance past the top four. Clearly, his coach Cee Lo Green had the same idea. Trevin sang this song like his life depended on it — will it be enough to earn himself a spot in the top three? We’ll see.

Nicholas David

Quirkmaster Nicholas David went home to Minnesota to see his new home for the first time and to spend time with his family before hitting the stage tonight. He had a really heartwarming homecoming at the Mall of America, where the mayor gave him a Golden Microphone. Nick hit the stage to sing Joe Cocker‘s “You Are So Beautiful,” which he dedicated to his family. Watching him sing to his wife and kids in the audience was a bit of a tearjerker, I won’t lie. He took the emotion of the moment and powered it into a masterful performance, rather than allowing the emotion to overpower him. It was a really standout moment.

A Mini-Reunion

Blake Shelton brought his entire season three team back together to sing “White Christmas” for his new holiday album, which they took the stage to perform live, as well. So many faces I’d already completely forgotten about! I chuckled when I noticed that 2Steel Girls, that mother-daughter country duo that was eliminated early, was made to share one microphone. One final indignity.

Cassadee Pope

On Cassadee’s trip home to West Palm Beach, FL, she visited a local radio station and received a key to the city while she performed “Torn,” her blind audition song, for her local fans. Blake handpicked the song “Stupid Boy” by Keith Urban for tonight’s performance — a particularly shrewd idea, returning to the country genre that Cassadee surprisingly shined in earlier in the season. Blake explained that he chooses country music for her because she has an ability to connect with an emotional lyric like no one else. I think that’s a wild stretch, but she sounded great nonetheless. Is there anyone actually worried she won’t be in the finale?

Terry McDermott

Terry McDermott visited his adopted home of New Orleans to surprise his son, who didn’t know he’d be coming. I’m not sure how much I believe it considering a camera was already in the house — what did they tell him the camera was there for? The better surprise was Terry’s aunt and uncle who flew in from Scotland. Terry’s shock and joy upon seeing them at that bar was really sweet. For his performance, he took on The Beatles’ “Let It Be”. I’d hoped that he’d try something a little funkier tonight, but there’s no denying that Terry completely wowed on the song. It’ll be interesting which one of these four is sent home tomorrow night.

There are only two weeks left in this season of The Voice, so it’s time for the final four to pull out all the stops and really wow America if they hope to be one of the two who will advance to the finale, airing Monday, Dec. 17! Frontrunner Cassadee Pope and the competitors nipping at her heels, Trevin Hunte, Nicholas David, and Terry McDermott, all have their considerable strengths which they need to play to tonight. I’ve brainstormed the perfect song for each of them to sing if they hope to advance!

Cassadee Pope: “Don’t Speak” — No Doubt

At this point, Cassadee could stand up on stage and yodel and she’d probably advance to the finale — she’s that well-loved. But the pop-rocker shouldn’t rest on her laurels because there are three men just dying to knock her out of the competition. So, tonight it would be great to see her sing something that fits into her wheelhouse, but has a little depth. This No Doubt classic would do just the trick.

Trevin Hunte: “So Emotional” — Whitney Houston

Trevin’s been a complicated contestant this season. He seems only to be able to truly shine when he’s singing the crap out of a power ballad, so if he wants to make it to the top two, he better not try anything too adventurous. This classic Whitney Houston track is one that Trevin could totally belt out to the rafters.

Nicholas David: “Sir Duke” — Stevie Wonder

Nicholas’ unique voice is so perfectly suited for something a little funky, a little groovy — what’s funkier or groovy-er than an early Stevie Wonder song? It would be great to see what Nick could do with this song. I think an especially spirited performance of something like this would carry him right into the top two.

Terry McDermott: “You Shook Me All Night Long” — AC/DC

There isn’t anything that Terry should ever sing except for rock, so why not go big with one of the biggest rock bands of all time? This classic AC/DC track would match Terry’s sensibilities and abilities perfectly. Plus, it’s a really fun song — something that’s sometimes lacking from Terry’s song choices.

A new week brings about the first, official live show, fans of The Voice! Tonight, the top 12 took the stage and gave it all the got, in hopes of earning your vote. As host Carson Daly announces, there’s another new twist to season three — there is no guarantee that a coach will be represented in the finale, which must have Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, and Blake Shelton shaking in their boots and stepping up their coaching game! So, just how did their singers do tonight?

Michaela Paige

The 16-year-old who earned Blake’s save in the live playoffs competed tonight with Pink‘s “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)”. Blake says the song is exactly what she needs to do, but that it won’t be easy. Michaela begins a little shaky on the low register notes that the song starts with, but as soon as she’s able to hit her mid-range, she really takes over. The coaches all praise Michaela for her effortlessness. Blake tells her that the performance left no doubt in his mind that he’d saved the right person. I think he did, too.

Dez Duron

Dez, the heartthrob whose heartthrob-iness is probably what earned him a place in the live shows, sang “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” in the style of Lauren Hill. Christina encourages him to work the ladies because they’re why he’s still around, after all. He does a serviceable job with the song, Christina salivates as she watches him perform, and his dimples will surely keep him around another week. What else is there to say?

Adriana Louise

Adriana says that she knows, at the heart of everything, she’s a pop artist, so she competed with…Carrie Underwood? Sure, okay. As she sang “Good Girl,” she did a good job with the sassiness needed to really sell the song. I’m still not sure I’m totally sold on her vocal ability, but it was a good performance. Cee Lo admires her conviction, which is probably her greatest trait. Blake enjoyed her song choice because, did you hear, Blake is a country artist!

Cody Belew

Cody has quickly become one of my favorite this season, and I was so glad that Cee Lo decided to save him. Tonight, he competed with “The Best” by Tina Turner, which should give him the another great opportunity to turn in an over-the-top performance that he’s come to be known for this season. His vocals during the performance simply rock and he really owns the stage throughout. Christina says she wants to see something more uptempo from him if he sticks around. Let’s make that happen, America!

Amanda Brown

Amanda is just unbelievable. Her voice constantly knocks me out. Tonight, she competed with “Spectrum,” by Florence & the Machine. She brought her best ethereal goddess to the stage tonight, singing the crap out of the song, though I worry she showed some of the strain in her high notes that Adam warned her about. The coaches each find a flaw with the performance, but I hardly think it’ll hurt her this week. Amanda should be around for some time. Let’s hope America doesn’t make me eat my words.

Bryan Keith

Bryan has a great voice, but his song choice so far has been a bit suspect. He’s stuck to a bland soft-rock genre, hardly taking any risks — which made his (or Adam’s) choice to compete with Amy Winehouse‘s “Back to Black” absolutely necessary. It was time to show that Bryan could do something else. And that’s exactly what he did. He brought a cool, Rat Pack quality to Amy’s genius track. While no one can touch Amy and what she could do with a song, he sings his face off, putting himself back in my good graces, at least. The coaches all feel that he’s taken the lead with this performance. We’ll see if that’s true tomorrow.

Cassadee Pope

Cassadee’s another artist who I’d love to see vary her genre choices, but she chose Kelly Clarkson‘s “Behind These Hazel Eyes” this week — keeping herself firmly in her wheelhouse. She had a little trouble with the lower register in the opening of the song, but she wails rather effectively once the song opens up. I don’t think Cassadee will ever sing a song badly, I just wish she’d try to approach a song more creatively. You feel me?

Trevin Hunte

Cee Lo announced that frontrunner Trevin would be singing Percy Sledge‘s “When A Man Loves A Woman,” a performance nearly guaranteed to keep the powerhouse singer at the top. Trevin sang with all the melismatic flourish we’ve come to expect from him, but I wonder if he’s overusing his ability to run up and down a string of notes. Nearly every line in this song ended with a vocal run — overuse can diminish intensity. But that minor quibble went out the window when he erupted into his finale. Dude can sing.

Melanie Martinez

Melanie is such a unique artist, I was so relieved when Adam saved her from elimination last week. She’s continually brought such an interesting take on familiar songs; she just oozes excitement. Tonight, she sang a song I wasn’t all that familiar with (“Cough Syrup” by Young the Giant), and her performance was a bit more straightforward than it has been in the past. Perhaps Adam coached her to reign in her essence a bit to earn more votes from America? Either way, it was a stellar performance. Let’s hope American gets on board with Melanie this week.

Nicholas David

Nicholas is an artist who I didn’t expect to make the cut — not because he isn’t good, but because I wasn’t sure America would embrace or understand him. I was happy to be proved wrong. Tonight, Nick competed with Huey Lewis and the News’ “The Power of Love”. He sounded lovely as always, and it was great to see him find his presence on the stage. Adam exclaims that he’s “so strange and beautiful,” which is precisely the way I feel about him.

Sylvia Yacoub

Sylvia, who absolutely dazzled for (I think) the first time last week, opted to compete with “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion. Ugh, this song. Is there a corner of the planet where it isn’t overplayed? It would be great to see some sort of different interpretation of the treacly ballad. Sylvia approaches it in a classical sense, however, which is a bit of a letdown. She hits it with as much power as her voice can allow, but it’s still pretty bland.

Terry McDermott

The Scot rocker chose to compete with “More Than A Feeling” by Boston this week. Terry is just the quintessential classic rocker. I imagine he appeals heavily to any older male who watches this show. His performance this week is just rock and roll, there’s not much more to say. He absolutely slays the song. Cee Lo says it was “damn good,” and I can’t disagree.
