Tommy Hilfiger moved well beyond his famous ‘preppy with a twist’ approach which he’s mastered beautifully,  with his new fall 2013 collection.

Tommy described his new winning collection as Savile Row meets Ivy League, taking inspiration from legendary 1960s London tailor, Tommy Nutter.

What made fall 2013 so much fun was the youthful mix of traditional menswear prints – glen plaid, houndstooth and argyles –  with mini-lengths and modern touches.

Houndstooth shorts were layered under longer coats, argyle-patterned leather sweaters were stretched into mini-dresses, and houndstooth turtlenecks were layered under modish boxy mini-coats topping super short skirts.

Shearling-edged coats and jackets with the shearling popping out on collars and cuffs were especially appealing.

Tommy’s slinky knee socks and high-heeled loafer boots finished off the looks in exactly the youthful way that Lucy Hale or Jessica Alba would want.

Tommy Hilfiger, 60, will partner up with American Idol and make his first appearance on the show March 15. Who better than Tommy Hilfiger, known for his young and fun all-American style, to be enlisted as the “Image Advisor” to the top competing singers to ensure fashion blunders on stage don’t send the singers packing for good! What a twist — we LOVE it!

Tommy said he is “honored” to be joining forces with host Ryan Seacrest, 37, and judges Jennifer Lopez, 42, Randy Jackson, 55, and Steven Tyler, 63. The style icon added: “My own experiences at the beginning of my career inspired my commitment to mentor young people who are dedicated to pursuing their dreams.”

The current contestants all have their own style, but everyone can use a few tips. We’ve seen how many former Idols change their look and style after the season ends (a.k.a. Season 4 Idol winner Carrie Underwood and Season 3 contestant Jennifer Hudson)! BUT now that Tommy is in the picture that will all change, and contestants can get their much-needed fashion makeovers before they go home!

“Musicians can bring such a unique vision and personality to the stage,” says Tommy. “I will look where they (the Idol contestants) were, where they are today and the possibility of where they could go,” Tommy told WWD.

Of the Top 12, there’ll definitely be some who’ll need their new “Image Advisor” next week! Colton Dixon, 20, needs to trash his skinny ties and suit vests … oh, and not to mention that mess on top of his head! And there’s Erika Van Pelt, who might as well have a flashing red light on her! She’s 26 years-old and dresses like an old woman — help them Tommy, work your magic!

Militant meets equestrian was all the rage at Tommy Hilfiger‘s Fall 2012 collection runway “Town and Country” show on Feb. 12. The ready-to-wear collection’s slim pants, leather-pleated skirts, high-collared tops and burgundy boots radiated confidence — but did not stray away from femininity.

I could definitely see Hunger Games’ star Jennifer Lawrence, 21, dressed in one of these gorgeous get-ups. Jennifer plays Katniss in the film — one of the strongest modern-day female superheroes there is! Katniss is confident, intelligent and incredibly courageous. I doubt Jennifer is any different.

And I think this is exactly the type of woman Tommy had in mind when he designed this terrific collection.

The mix of military coats, pleated knee-length skirts, high-collars and gold buttons is definitely Capitol-worthy (for all you Hunger Games fans!).

The collection was absolutely stunning and I hope to see Jennifer in one of these stunning outfits on the red carpet soon.

Tommy Hilfiger was my personal hero on 9/11.

That’s because he took care of me, his daughter Ally, now the designer of the NAHM collection, and a number of his employees on that very terrifying day.

Tommy and I were at a scheduled breakfast together on the morning of 9/11. We’d been friends for many years and were chatting about all our latest work and family news when a man came running through our restaurant at about 8:45 am, shouting that planes had hit the World Trade Center and that it was a terrorist attack.

All of a sudden a hush went over the entire restaurant and we could see outside that people began pouring out of the subways as the public transit system closed down.

Tommy sprang into action and invited me upstairs to the safety of his apartment while we figured out what was actually going on. Thank goodness he did.

Cell phones or even regular phones weren’t working. I couldn’t reach my husband Michael to tell him that I was safe and that I’d taken shelter with Tommy and that it was clear that I had no way of getting home.

From Tommy ‘s living room window we watched horrified as the Twin Towers fell while his daughter Ally and a group of Tommy’s employees gathered because like me, they had no where else to go. Graciously Tommy ordered everyone lunch and kept up our spirits as we watched the smoke from the burning towers envelop the lower Manhattan and as terrible TV news updates ,depressingly kept rolling in.

At about 5 pm Tommy decided that despite reports that all the bridges and tunnel out of Manhattan had been closed, he would try driving me and a few of his employees who lived outside NYC, home. He was also anxious to get home to his younger children in Connecticut.We all piled into his car and sure enough, the reports were wrong and we made it out of the city.

Thanks to Tommy I arrived at my doorstep, safe and sound.

Tommy and I talk about that shocking day in our video interview below as well as discuss his optimism about today and the future, expressed in his bright; pop art meets preppy Spring 2012 collection.

He was inspired by legendary 60′s artist Andy Warhol and his pop art colors. I love the bright houndstooth sundresses, skirt suits and shoes, and the turquoise and pink camouflage dresses are fantastic!

It’s a bold, optimistic collection and Tommy says that optimism was exactly the point he wanted to make.

“It’s time for Americans to be strong and to look ahead,” he told me. “I believe that positive energy pulls people out of bad places. We have to show young people that you can move forward with positive energy-you have to ride it!”

Well said Tommy! It’s exactly what you’ve done yourself.
